Before we make any final decisions, is there anyone who would like to step forward and assume a leadership role in continuing our annual film festival in Cumberland?

ALLEGANY ALLIED ARTS ANNOUNCES
CANCELLATION OF 2023-2024 PROGRAM ACTIVITY

Allegany Allied Arts, Inc., was founded in 2014 to ensure the continued production of the Queen City Film Festival (QCFF). In mid-2012, after an initial outing, our production team took over the Queen City Independent Filmmakers Contest, renaming it the Queen City Film Festival (QCFF), and rescheduling the event from April to late September. Since then, we have screened QCFF at the New Embassy Theatre, the Allegany Museum, Cumberland Ramada, and Mezzos.

Over this time, we have failed to attract and retain a sustaining local audience, and we have also failed to complete necessary community development work to address this problem. With dramatic schedule changes and cancellations dictated by pandemic, what audience we had left and failed to return. We have also seen changes in the film festival landscape, reflected in fewer submissions that would have necessitated both the omission of several categories, but also the repetition of several programming blocks just to fill time.

Since our founding, we have used an annual screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (RHPS) as our principal fundraiser for QCFF. While also at the mercy of COVID cancellations, we also suffered the loss of our long-time venue for RHPS, the Windsor Castle Events Center, as it is now rented out year-round and no longer available for event rentals. Our costs for this event have skyrocketed over time, and it is now almost impossible to break even as the costs dictate that we seat more people than any current venue capacity. We also found that after two years cancelled due to COVID, the half of our audience used to travelling to attend from outside the region has evaporated.

For these, and other personal reasons, we have decided to cancel all remaining program activity and public appearances for 2023 and 2024. This includes annual events such as RHPS and QCFF, and also community events such as Cumberland Pride Festival, FSU Appalachian Festival, and Cumberland Heritage Days Festival, and all others.
