Frozen Gnome 10k/50k The Frozen Gnome's beautiful single-track course will take runners through the winter wonderland of Veteran Acres and Sterne’s Woods.

There’s no place like Gnome! Come chill with us on a fun and frosty run in Crystal Lake on January 10th. Folks may choose either the 50K ultra run or the 10K race for speedsters. Gnome doubt about it, either course will be tough. There will be age group awards and surprises along the trail. The Gnome Depot Aid Station will be heated and well stocked with warm drinks and hot soup. Visit ultrasignup.com to reserve a race bib today. Registration is limited to 200- 10K and 50K. It doesn’t take a Sherlock Gnomes to know this event will be exceptionally cool. Race is put on by Ornery Mule Racing that puts on many trail & ultrarunning events in the Midwest. Race Director is Michele Hartwig. Course Director is Jeff Lenard with a huge amount of support from Jeff Goodmanson. Course is supported by the McHenry (County) Ultra Running Dudes and Dudettes – MUDD, Founded in 2010, MUDD is a group of ultra and trail running friends who share a love of trails and distance running. The group is about FUN and welcomes runners of all levels. MUDD has weekly runs in Veteran Acres and Sterne’s Woods in Crystal Lake.

There’s GNOME race like it! ❄️🧙‍♂️

The Frozen Gnome returns to Crystal Lake on January 9, 2027!

Choose your winter adventure: 50K or 10K on the beautiful single-track trails of Veteran Acres and Sterne’s Woods.

And when we say challenging, we mean it. The Frozen Gnome is TRIPLE BLACK DIAMOND rated. 🖤🖤🖤

50K runners (solo & relay) take on the 10K loop five times, complete with Butt Slide Hill, winter trails, hot food, coffee, heat and our amazing volunteers waiting for you at the Gnome Depot Aid Station.

Snow? Ice? Mud? Frozen ground? January gets to decide. You just get to run it. 😈❄️

Gnome doubt about it, this one is tough AND ridiculously fun.

For anyone wondering what Triple Black Diamond means: it’s really freaking hard. 😂

- Pink flags mark the course.
- Signs posted where needed.
- Please follow the pink flags, and signs- not the person in front of you. They may be heading the wrong way or not running the race.

There is plenty of parking available if you follow the directions provided and plan accordingly. Arriving prepared will help keep race morning smooth for everyone.
