Mike Sterling 10K / 5K Race Saturday morning of Crab Derby (Labor Day) weekend, the annual Mike Sterling 10K / 5K Race is held in Crisfield, MD at the City Dock. (10k ruck) 7:30 a.m.

The 44th Annual Mike Sterling Crab Derby 10K / 5k Race & 10k Ruck will be held in Crisfield, MD on Saturday, September 2, 2023 at 7:00 a.m. (10k) and 7:35 a.m. (5k). $25 online thru 8/27, $35 8/28-9/1. $40 race day. Stay for all of the Crab Derby festivities. Participants will enjoy a fast, flat course that meanders thru the City of Crisfield as well as the neighborhoods and along the waterfront o

utskirts. Water stops will be provided at two locations along our route. The finish area pavilion will provide both shade and refreshment during the awards ceremony. After the race stay in Crisfield for the many Crab Derby activities. We welcome you to our town! Keith & Heather Thompson

Course Information

The 10k course begins at the Crisfield City Dock and winds around the beautiful Somers Cove Marina, passing the location of the Crab Derby festival grounds toward the United States Coast Guard Station. The first water stop, shared with the walk course, is at the turnaround at Hammock Point. At the intersection of Fourth Street and Norris Harbor Road, the runners go right toward Woodson Elementary School, while the walkers go left back onto Fourth Street. The 10k course proceeds north on Somerset Avenue until the intersection of Somerset Ave and Asbury Avenue, where it meanders through shaded neighborhoods of Asbury Ave., State Street, and Main Street Extended. At the traffic light, the course resumes north on Somerset Avenue toward the dual highway. A police officer will be located here to stop traffic and runners will make a left near the McDonalds restaurant for a straight run to the finish line at the City Dock. As you race down Maryland Avenue, look at Crisfield's new library to your right. The 5k course follows the run course until the intersection of Norris Harbor Road and Fourth Street, where it heads back on Fourth Street to the dual highway near the Captain Tyler motel. At that intersection, it proceeds left on Maryland Avenue back to the City Dock. Arrival information

All participants are strongly encouraged to pre-register online Anyone who wants register by 8/27will be guaranteed a t-shirt. Anyone who wishes to register on the day of, should arrive no later than 6:30 a.m. Parking Information

Ample parking is available on the streets near the Crisfield City Dock. Do not park at the City Dock, because these spots are for persons taking the boats to Smith and Tangier Island.

The 46th Annual Mike Sterling Race was a huge success! We had an incredible turnout with 256 total registrants and the energy was off the charts from start to finish! Whether you were running, walking, rucking, volunteering, or cheering from the sidelines YOU made this race unforgettable. Year after year we continue to see the next generation of runners with their families and their young kids participating, it is a great site!

6 p.m. to 8 p.m. -- Packet Pickup at Wellington Beach, Brick Kiln Road

**Please note that if you registered before the T-shirt deadline of August 1, you will have the size you requested. If you registered after that date, it will be a first come first serve basis after the race and awards are complete.

12:00 a.m. -- price increases to $40

6:15 a.m. to 6:45 a.m. -- Same day registration and limited same day packet pickup

Weather
Our race will be held rain or shine.

While some years, the Mike Sterling Race is a hot, humid race, the cooler weather may give many of you a chance to PR.

Parking
Free parking is available along West Main Street and the many side streets off of West Main Street. Please do not park in any of the reserved parking spots either under the condominiums or at the Crisfield City dock. There is a public parking lot between 10th and 11th street, accessible from Broad Street.

Restrooms
Porta potties will be located at the City Dock. There are public restrooms at the Crisfield municipal parking lot located between 10th and 11th street.

Coffee/breakfast
Gordon’s Confectionary, 831 West Main Street, Crisfield, Maryland 21817 will be open early and serving coffee and breakfast.

The 10K Course
The 6.2 mile course has three water stops at approximately miles 1.5, 3 and 4.5. There will be water at all stops and Electrolyte Drink Mix at the second water stop. Make sure to go RIGHT at the 10K / 5K split at the bottom of Norris Harbor Road. We will have race officials there and at the intersection of Somerset and Asbury Avenue to direct you. Traffic enforcement will be at the intersection of Somerset Avenue and Maryland Avenue to control traffic to let you cross this highway.

The 5K Course
The 3.1 mile course mirrors the 10K run course but, at Norris Harbor Drive, comes back past the marina, onto 7th Street, and back onto Maryland Avenue. Traffic enforcement will be at the intersection of Seventh Street and Maryland Avenue to control traffic to let you cross onto Maryland Avenue.

Frequently asked questions
What age group awards are you giving out?
For the 10k and 5k races will have an overall male and an overall female winner and age group awards for 14 and under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70 and over. There is also a Lank Parks Award, both male and female, for the fastest local runner (lives in 21817 zip code, 10k race). We will have an overall for the 10k Ruck as well.

Is the race stroller friendly?
Yes. There are bumped handicap ramps at Somerset Avenue and Maryland Avenue, but otherwise the course is smooth. Please seed yourself according to your estimated finish time and try not to block other runners.

Is the race dog friendly?
Yes, but please keep your four-legged friend leashed at all times.

Will there be on-site medical support?
Yes, volunteers from the Lower Somerset Ambulance Squad will be on site throughout the race.

Can I run the walk course?
Yes, please feel free to walk the 5k course.

How much weight must I carry for the 10k ruck?
20 pounds. And remember, the 10k Ruck starts at 7:00 a.m., so that you will be finishing around the same time as the runners.

Is it too late to sign up?
No! We currently have 200+ athletes signed up, which is within striking distance of an all time record of 220 participants. Sign up online today before midnight for only $35 or tomorrow for $40.

Registration remains open through race day, so if you are still contemplating, now's the time. The weather forecast is shaping up to be exceptional with a high of 77 and a morning low of about 60!

Packet Pick Up THIS FRIDAY
6:00 - 8:00pm at Wellington Beach

Packet pickup is Friday, August 29, 2025 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Wellington Beach. Adults who pick up their packet up in advance of race day will get a coupon for a FREE PLAYA BOWL. Children who pick up their packet in advance of race day will get a coupon for a FREE Snow Ball from PAY's SNO SHACK.

We encourage everyone to pick up their packet Friday as we will have only a limited ability to give you your packet on Saturday (6:30am ish we will be set up). Picking up the packet on Friday enables us to have a smooth race day schedule.
