These shops are serving great coffee and cozy vibes.

Fall menus are up around Salt Lake City. These are the ones where I'd rather sit down than take the cup with me.

Here's what to order at each, and where to sit while you drink it.

• Bjorn's Brew - Order the Witch's Brew, then stay a while, every drink comes with a shortbread cookie and dogs get real bones.
• Honeysuckle Coffee Co. - Get the Brown Sugar Maple Latte in a room that feels like a big living room, not a cafe.
• Canyons Coffee - Try the flight to sample a few fall drinks, then stay a while in a space built for hanging out.
• La Barba Coffee - Order the Pumpkin Spice syrup in your drink, then settle into the relaxed downtown room built for sitting a while.
• Peace on Earth Coffee - Order the Harvest Moon and post up on the dog-friendly patio or a couch, built for sticking around, not leaving.
• High Point Coffee - Order the Autumn Woods, then grab a seat by the fireplace at the door — plenty of room to stay.

The drink is the easy part. Any of these will make you something good in October. What separates them is whether you still want to be sitting there when the cup is empty.

Caulk, weatherstripping, window film. All of it works, and all of it keeps something in.

The fall winterizing list is good advice. It's just only half a list, and the missing half is free.

One thing that didn't fit on the slides: if the air in the house is dry enough that your skin is cracking, check the humidity while you're at it. Between 30 and 50 percent is the range. Over 50 and you start inviting mold, which is a worse trade than dry hands.

Send this to whoever does the winterizing at your house.

If the house feels stuffy no matter what you do, you've been solving the wrong problem.

Cleaning takes dust off the surfaces you can reach. The stuffiness isn't on a surface.

Once the windows are shut for the season, your furnace is the only thing moving air in the house, and it moves the same air every time. Carbon dioxide, cooking fumes, whatever comes off your cleaning products. It all stays in here with you until spring, and no amount of wiping counters touches it.

Two things actually change it, and neither one costs you heat.

Run your kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans all the way through when you cook or shower. They vent outside. Most people use them for smoke and steam and nothing else.

Then on the next mild day, crack a couple of windows on opposite sides of the house for five or ten minutes and let the air move through.

DM me and I'll send you the filter rating and swap schedule that goes with this, so the air has somewhere to go and something catching what's in it.

The Sandy and Draper fall season is posted. These are the 7 I'd start with.

🎭 - Hale has three stages going at once, so there's almost always something new to catch even after you've seen one show.
🎭 - It's a small nonprofit theater with comfortable seating, so even a sold-out night doesn't feel cramped.
🎭 - They're a community ballet company, so dancers from all over the valley train and perform together there.
🎭 American West Symphony & Chorus of Sandy - They put on roughly 14 concerts a season, moving between venues around the valley from fall through early summer.
🎭 Cottonwood High School Theatre - It's a high school production, so tickets are a budget-friendly way to see a full musical with a live cast.
🎭 Sandy Arts Guild - The Theater at Mount Jordan - It's run by the city, so costumes and sets stay in rotation and get reused season to season.
🎭 - It's an old neighborhood theater run almost entirely by volunteers, which is part of why it feels different from the bigger stages.

Don't put off buying tickets, especially for the short-run shows.

Send this to whoever you'd want in the next seat.

Most families end up guessing at what you wanted for the house in the week after a funeral.

Not because you didn't plan. Because a will only answers one question.

The house is the one that causes the most trouble. Every other asset gets divided. A house has to be kept or sold, and somebody has to decide which one.

Say why, too. If one kid gets the house and the others don't, or the split isn't even, tell them the reason while you're still here to give it.

If you're not sure how your property is titled, send me a message. I can't give you legal advice, but I can go through the deed with you and point you toward an estate attorney.

You can have a perfectly valid will and still have your house sit in probate for months. Here's where the gap usually is.

A will tells a court what you wanted. It doesn't control the deed.

Property titled in your name alone goes through probate first, no matter what the will says. Joint tenancy with right of survivorship passes straight to the surviving owner. Tenancy in common doesn't. Most states also let you record a transfer on death deed, which names who gets the house and keeps it out of probate.

Your retirement accounts work the same way. They pass to whoever is on the beneficiary form, and that name beats your will every time.

Pull your deed from the county recorder and read how you're listed. If it doesn't match what you want, send me a message. I can't give you legal advice, but I can go through how your property is titled with you and point you toward an estate attorney.

A trip does not have to cost a flight and three vacation days.

Five weekend getaways within about two hours of Salt Lake City, yet far enough away to feel restful.

🚗 The Homestead Crater - Book the Crater ahead for a weekend, since reservations there are not a formality.
🚗 Park City Mountain - Parking runs $60 to $80, the cost nobody plans for.
🚗 Snowbasin Resort - No lodging on the mountain, so people stay in Ogden, thirty minutes out.
🚗 Sundance Mountain Resort - Late September into early October is when the canyon turns.
🚗 Bear Lake - July and August are when the water gets into the mid 60s and 70s.

The one thing I would sort out before you leave is where you are sleeping. Everything else on a trip this short works itself out.

Send this to whoever you would take, then book one.

09/18/2026

Every one of these is close enough to leave after work on Friday.

Five places within about two hours of Salt Lake City, and none of them take a day off work.

🚗 The Homestead Crater - Soaking, snorkeling or diving a 90 degree geothermal spring, under an hour to Midway.
🚗 Park City Mountain - The largest ski resort in the country, forty five minutes from downtown.
🚗 Snowbasin Resort - Olympic downhill terrain and free parking, about an hour north above Ogden.
🚗 Sundance Mountain Resort - Skiing, biking and Stewart Falls under Mount Timpanogos, an hour up Provo Canyon.
🚗 Bear Lake - Twenty miles of turquoise water, two hours north through Logan Canyon.

Book one night instead of driving out and back the same day. You come home from a day trip more tired than when you left.

Send this to whoever you would go with, then pick a weekend.

Most of what people do to their houses raises what it costs to insure them. A few do the opposite, and nobody tells you which ones.

Your insurer prices your policy on one thing: how likely you are to file a claim. Anything that lowers those odds can lower what you pay. But only if you tell them it is there.

One piece the slides left out. A new roof cuts your claim risk, so your premium can come down. It also costs more to replace than the old one did, so your rebuild coverage may need to come up. Reporting it lets your insurer move both at once instead of just one.

Talk to your insurance professional to confirm what applies to your policy. If you don't have one, DM me and I'll recommend someone I trust.
