You may have heard of the Comstock Windmill Festival, Comstock Rock, or even Godstock. Share in the behind the scenes successes and failures of the man with the idea and the determination, faith, friends, and fortitude to make it all happen.

Back in 1999, it started as a little concert in a pasture near a very small Nebraska town. The Comstock Windmill Festival grew into a 23-year series of music festivals that filled the county with thousands of people, hundreds of RV’s, and dozens of performers for several weekends each summer. Comstock Windmill Festival brought in first-class country artists and bands. Comstock Rock was added as a second summer concert. Godstock and Harvest Festival concerts came later. Headliners included Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, Charlie Daniels, Alice Cooper, Peter Frampton, Steppenwolf, Alabama, Kansas, and more. Many soon-to-be big stars and many already big stars entertained families and friends gathered together for a really good time under the starry, but sometimes stormy, skies of Nebraska

Christmas at Comstock started 10 years ago with the sole objectives to impress his twin brother Gunter who could see it from heaven and 15 month old granddaughter, Amelie, who couldn't
remember it for 15 minutes. It has ballooned into one of the best and biggest and brightest Christmas displays in the Midwest. The original intent was to decorate a house but when an anonymous donor left $3000 worth of lights and inflatables over a thirty-day period at Henry Nuxoll’s home, the Christmas at Comstock took on a life of its own. Comstock has a population of less than 100, two retail businesses, a bar and pop machine. A senior center feeds the elderly and locals 5 days a week. The post office is so small, Henry jokes, that they might take 2 numbers off the zip code. 688 would be easier to remember. Once home to 40 legitimate businesses and 400 people, time has passed it by. This makes Comstock, not on a Rand McNally map, the perfect place for Christmas lights and display. No highway speed thru traffic. No traffic jams,

What started as one decorated house has led to a mile of lights and extension cords, 40 scenes such as Grinchville, Mickey Mouse Club, Enchanted Forest with dinosaurs coming out of extinction, Minionville, Old West, Snowmen and Teddy Bears, Land Buggy Lane, Fast Lane, Old West, Polar Express Airport with a handcrafted bi-plane, Comstock Police car with the original city jail, housing the Grinch that almost stole Christmas. 437 Inflatables from 3 foot to 20 foot tall occupy the scenes with buggies, inflatable Clydesdales and moose pulling 100 year old freight wagons. A dozen old cars and vehicles are matched with inflatable replicas. The original Conestoga Mall sign that once signed the way to the Grand Island shopping mall is on display. You can't see it in Grand Island, but you can still see it in Comstock. There is Santa in a pay phone with sign saying “Santa is coming to Comstock. He just called.” A crowd favorite is the entire baseball field with a life size inflatable playing every position. The field lights are turned on every night at 6 o’clock game time with inflatable fans in the bleachers. The entire City Park and Community garden are home to Christmas. Hand-crafted items occupy most of lots, including Nativity scenes and Santa’s North Pole. There is too much to describe, you
need to see it first-hand.

It takes an hour to walk the display and a half hour to drive with no charge for admission. Lights are on from 5 pm to 11 pm. The Saddle Up Saloon will continue the tradition of free popcorn,
apple cider and hot chocolate during business hours. Call 308-370-1023 in case of inclement weather or more information. Tour buses are welcome.

What better way to impress loved ones in heaven than a mile of lights and over 400 inflatables weaved through the small village of Comstock. Hennry Nuxoll hoped his twin brother and a 15-month-old granddaughter who couldn’t remember Christmas could see the light and feel the love from above. That act of love turned into the largest Christmas display in the Midwest.

Nuxoll finished decorating his home for Christmas 8 years ago when an inflatable Santa and Reindeer showed up on his doorstep. That anonymous Christmas gift led to over $3000 worth of decorations anonymously showing up over the next 30 days. Nuxoll displayed the gifts and hoped it brought joy to anyone who saw them.

Seven years later, Comstock now has 20 connecting blocks of Christmas displays, dozens of cars, boats and campers, buggy’s, sled and horse drawn equipment, 12 buildings, 20 trees, 50 Santas, a mile of running lights, a mile of extension cords, 1000 tent stakes, over 400 inflatables which range in size from 3 feet to 20 feet high, and the newly added baseball field with an inflatable active at each position. The village includes 40 “neighborhoods” including Grinchville, Bed Rock, Snowman’s Land, Teddy Bear Boulevard, Mickey Mouse Club, and the Comstock Police.

New for 2024 Will be 9 John Deere Mowers, (Deeres) Pulling a Red Santa Sled. A new scene is The Night Mare Before Christmas Featuring a 20 Foot Frankenstein and Mummy plus Characters from the Movie, Also added at the Windmill Festival site 3 miles North of Comstock is the 124 year house built by a homesteader is decorated from one end to the other. Walk thru are welcome. Again this year is the Saddle Up Saloon. Our newest business in Comstock will offer free Hot Chocolate and Cider every night the lights are on from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. We hope this promotes our highly anticipated saloon.

The Village of Comstock will again convert to a Comstock Christmas City the day after Thanksgiving. The lights will stay on until January 1, 2024, 5 p.m. until 11 p.m. It is free admission and takes about 30 minutes to drive through and an hour to walk the displays. For more information, call 308-370-1023 on inclement weather or high wind conditions that might limit the visibility.
