In 2003, UNESCO declared Día de Mu***os a “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity,” recognizing this deeply rooted Mexican celebration for its cultural importance, spiritual depth, and power to unite communities through rituals, offerings, and traditions passed down for generations.

Date of Declaration: November 7, 2003
Origin: With pre-Hispanic roots that later blended with Catholic beliefs, Día de Mu***os represents a unique cultural syncretism.
Recognition: UNESCO honored it as a “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” for its integrative and representative value.
Key Elements: The celebration features offerings, beautifully decorated altars, cempasúchil (marigold flowers), papel picado, sugar skulls, and pan de mu**to, all symbolizing the connection between life and death.
Purpose: The recognition seeks to protect and preserve this unique cultural expression that strengthens family and community bonds while keeping Mexican identity alive.

More than a celebration, Día de Mu***os is a vibrant tribute to life — a colorful remembrance that keeps the heart of Mexico beating through memory, love, and tradition.

Known as la flor de los mu**tos — the flower of the dead — the cempasúchil (from the Náhuatl word cempoalxóchitl, meaning twenty flowers) is one of the most iconic symbols of Día de Mu***os.

Its vibrant orange and yellow petals are said to guide the spirits of our loved ones back to the world of the living with their bright color and distinctive fragrance. In Mexican tradition, the cempasúchil represents the sun — the source of life — and the fragility and beauty of existence.

During Día de Mu***os, families decorate altars (ofrendas), graves, and streets with cempasúchil petals to honor and remember those who have passed. The paths made of petals are believed to help souls find their way home to reunite with their families, even if just for one night.

A bloom that connects life, memory, and love — the cempasúchil reminds us that those we’ve lost are never truly gone.

In Remembrance of Jane Goodall

Jane Goodall’s impact on the world reached far beyond science. Her fame became so profound that, at an awards ceremony in the United States in 2009, she was introduced with these words: “If conservation had rock stars, this woman would be Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, and Elvis, all rolled into one.”

On her countless journeys, she was never alone. Always by her side was a small stuffed monkey named Mr. H, a gift from Gary Haun, a blind U.S. Marine veteran. Mr. H became a symbol of resilience and hope, traveling with Jane to more than 60 countries, reminding all who saw him of the strength of kindness and perseverance.

Jane also carried with her an unfailing belief in the power of small actions. In an interview with BBC Mundo, she recalled a moment in Burundi when a child asked her after a lecture: “If I pick up one piece of trash every day, will it really make a difference?”

Her response was simple, yet transformative: “Yes—and you could persuade 10 of your friends to pick up trash every day, and then each of them could persuade 10 of their friends.”

Jane remembered the child’s eyes growing wider with every word. “He will grow up with hope, that is certain,” she said.

Jane Goodall leaves us with that same legacy—hope that small actions matter, that resilience carries us forward, and that the world can be transformed by compassion and courage.

Rest in peace, Dr. DBE and Ph.D in Ethology Jane Goodall!
