The Summer of Celebration is upon us!

2026 is a special year! Columbiana’s Liberty Day Festival will celebrate its 40th anniversary, Columbiana will celebrate its 200th anniversary as the Shelby County seat, and July 4, 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the United States. We have many other reasons to celebrate as several Columbiana businesses and organizations celebrate their own milestones. We have designated this summer the “Summer of Celebration” and we plan to celebrate like never before!

In 1986 Liberty Day began as a way to honor the refurbishment of the Statue of Liberty. That year communities from around the nation held festivals to bring awareness and raise funds to help with refurbishing efforts. After that year Columbiana made a commitment to make Liberty Day an annual celebration. Those first several years were all held downtown. It was not until crowds grew and space became an issue that the evening concert and the Liberty Day fireworks were moved to the SCHS Stadium.

This year Liberty Day Festival will look different because this summer is different. Liberty Day will start on Friday night with the same energy that we’ve all come to love. Then, on Saturday morning, we will kick off the day with vendors, the 5K run, and performances by Dream Maker dancers. These are all longstanding Liberty Day traditions. The parade time has changed to 11am as we hope to beat the heat just a little. But unlike in years past, the event will not shut down after the parade. We will continue to have vendors, activities, and music into the night. The concert and fireworks that typically happen at the SCHS Stadium will take place in Old Mill Square Park and will be an extension of the daytime festivities. Our goal is to create a festival that feels more cohesive and gives citizens, businesses, sponsors, vendors, performers, and staff more time to enjoy the celebration.

The decision to move the concert and fireworks was not taken lightly. We know that change is hard and we considered the effects it would have on everyone involved. The location of the nighttime concert and fireworks may have changed but we guarantee that the resources, effort, time, hard work, and dedication that go into Liberty Day will remain unmatched. This will be the location for this historical year, but it has not been a permanent change.
We are taking Liberty Day back to its roots this year. From the first shot of the cannon to start the 5k to the crackle of the last firework, we will celebrate 250, 200, and 40 years in the most beautiful downtown in central Alabama. We hope that you will join us for the Summer of Celebration and all the events that make Columbiana the best place to live, work, and play.
