On this day in 1920, an explosion at the Keeley Stove factory showers four workers with molten iron, setting their clothes on fire. Fellow workers stamp out the flames. Two of the four men suffer serious burns.

On this day in 1834, Stephen Smith places an ad in the Columbia Spy offering to sell his lumber business and real estate in Columbia. It is a response to rumblings among poor and middle-class whites that the town’s successful African Americans should sell their holdings and move on. Smith is calling their bluff—as the wealthiest man in Columbia, he knows no one has the financial wherewithal to take him up on his offer.

On this day in 1930, the Lancaster–York Intercounty Bridge (aka the Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge) opens, at a cost of $2.5 million. The 25-cent toll is equivalent to roughly $5 in 2026 dollars. It will be dedicated on November 11. It is still the nation's longest concrete-span bridge.

On this day* in 1913, John Q. Denny passes away in Columbia at the age of 81. Denny was among the group of men that prevented Confederate troops from crossing into Lancaster County by setting the Columbia-Wrightsville bridge on fire. His portrait hangs in the Columbia Public Library. * Correct date is December 29 but we'll leave the post up because people are enjoying it. We have another Denny photo for that day!
