Most of the families from this area attended the First Baptist Church of Bayou La Batre; they traveled by boat, walked and later rode Mr. A mission was established by the First Baptist Church by initially meeting in homes; among these were: the Joe and Mae Barbour home, Jim and Catherine Kennerson home, Leslie and Elizabeth Clarke home, and the Raymond and Cora Barbour home. Bro. Ray Meggison was
the pastor at First Baptist Church at the time. He and his wife Cleo would often walk down the railroad: Cleo would play the Accordion and Bro. Meggison would preach and sing. The mission moved into a building in 1945 which was constructed out of lumber from the old DD Camp buildings that were being torn down. The land for the first building came from Jim and Catherine Kennerson who had purchased it from a Holiness preacher, Ms. Bessie Kirkindol. Meggison preached at the First Baptist Church and the mission. On October 18, 1946 at the Ninety First Meeting of the Mobile Baptist Association which met at the newly acquired camp at Citronelle, San Souci Baptist Church with Bro. James Messer as pastor was recognized as a free standing Cooperation Church of the Southern Baptist Convention. Messer resigned the church in 1949 and Bro. Bryce Evans was called as pastor. During Bro. Evans’ leadership from 1949-1952 land was acquired from Freddie and Christine Barber, Voncile Barber and Jeff Barnes and a new block church was established. Hayes and Bro. Charlie Landry were the overseers but much of the work was donated by the members. The church also expanded by establishing two missions, at Heron Bay and Fowl River. Dr. Forest Hawkins did a good work as pastor from 1953-1955. Purcell, Savage, Naylor and Dr. Paul Irby and Bro. James Strickland followed. In 1963 the former pastor of the First Baptist Church of Grand Bay, Rev. Ruben Parten became the pastor and served until 1977. Frank Ware, 1977-1978, Bro. Frank Serda, 1978-1979, Dr. Danny Graham, 1980-1982 and Bro. Larry Springfield, 1982-1985 followed. In 1985 Bro. Bryce Evans was called for the second time to serve as pastor, during which time additional land was acquired from Mrs. Voncile Barber.
