The 2006 film adaptation won Jennifer Hudson an Oscar for her portrayal of Effie White, particularly, in her raw, passionate performance of the musical's signature song "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." DREAMGIRLS premiered on Broadway at the Imperial Theater on December 20, 1981 and played for 1,521 performances, winning six Tony Awards and four Drama Desk Awards.
