Seems like folks have been super excited about the Tinkerer Nights recently. If that’s you, welcome! Sounds like a lot of y’all don’t live in Ohio but want to start your own Anti-Tech Tech Club.
Tinkerer Nights gather fellow anti-authoritarians who like gizmos and gadgets, and want to use them to thwart the panopticon surveillance state while building a liberatory future for all. Whether that’s building communication infrastructure or detecting surveillance, understanding electricity or troubleshooting machinery, we understand technology as a terrain of struggle: we must reclaim that power for ourselves. The unifying principle is that we engage with technology from an anti-authoritarian and anti-capitalist political orientation. Screw Flock, No Data Centers Anywhere. Tech for the people, towards a luxurious future. Techno-utopia type s**t.
Some people are extremely knowledgeable about a specific subject. Some people have no technical background. We welcome anyone with a curious mind! We all start somewhere and no one knows everything.
Some nights are specific, focused presentations and interactive skill-sharing. Some nights allow space for multiple breakout groups to work on their projects. Some nights are just an opportunity for some nerds to yack about their individual pet project.
The secret is to start. Get a few of your nerdy friends together, secure a space, and pick a project to work on. Momentum takes time to build, we’ve been having these for maybe 2 years through various iterations of buds—don’t get disheartened if your first one (or three) aren’t as well attended as you’d hoped. Do some outreach: flyers, social media, DMs. The success of our posts demonstrate there’s a lot of appetite for events like this. Have good vibes: seltzers and a good playlist go a long way. Be approachable and excited to meet new people, practice those social skills (yes, even you). Explain your jargon early and often. People aren’t as scary as they seem, especially when you’re all there for a shared interest.
And that’s mostly it! There ain’t no secret sauce, you can pull it off too.
