A Songbird Rehab Center...special interest in neotropical migratory songbirds...

Ride The Wind Wild Bird Rehab Center rehabilitates injured and orphaned native songbirds. All native songbirds are protected by law.....so a State and Federal License is required in order to work with these birds. Tracy ( that would be me ) started the center and holds the State and Federal License for Ride The Wind. Ride The Wind does not get paid or funded........so all supplies...food...medications...veterinarian bills....etc.. are paid for out of our own pocket. If you are interested in becoming a part of our team......or volunteering in some way...and would like to learn more about wild bird rehabilitation........
please contact me.... Tracy
I would be happy to talk to you and answer any questions that you may have. (513) 797-7239

Hi.... my name is Norman...I am one of Ride's teachers.
I have an injury and can never be released... so I live here at Ride.

But there are other Hummingbirds that came into rehab this year that need more time to recover so they are spending the winter here at Ride.

Tracy just has numbers on them.....but I told her that I was going to ask you guys to name them.

So.....if you want to name some Hummingbirds...that would be cool..

Tracy is not putting up all of their pictures ...we all look alike anyway...except me of course...I am the most beautiful and charming Hummingbird of the group.

No rules except I get to decide what names get chosen....
so have at it...
Suggest as many names as you want. :)

I got this Wood Thrush in a few days ago.
Two very nice people ( Erin and Jeanne Bittman ) found him on their deck with his foot caught in the woven part of a chair.

More than likely he hit a window and bounced off the window and landed in the chair.
I think they said he was stuck behind the cushion of the chair.
( Please correct me if I am wrong Erin )

He has a back injury...so unfortunately he is going to have to miss migration this season.

However.....on the bright side.....He LOVES room service
I filled one bowl with mealworms.....
another bowl with Superworms...
And a bowl of fresh fruit ..blueberries...grapes and cherries.

I also gave him a stem of Pokeweed berries which he quickly chowed down on before anything else.

I have lots of Pokeweed on my property....so when the berries ripen I pick them for my rehab birds and also I freeze a bunch for later...so they can have Pokeweed berries all winter.

ALL parts of Pokeweed is VERY poisonous folks...so don't eat it or handle it.
Birds love the berries and eat them with no problem....but NOT for humans or pets.

So this guy will be spending the winter here at Ride....being waited on and served breakfast lunch and dinner eating everything in sight.
Wish I could teach him how to do his dishes.

Wood Thrushes are long distance migrants. They fly non-stop over the Gulf Of MEXICO headed to Central America for the winter.

These guys are listed as a Yellow Tipping Point species....meaning they have lost more than 50% of their population in the past 50 years. :(

Thank you for rescuing him Erin and Jeanne.....

The oldest known Wood Thrush was at least 10 years and 2 months old.

I got this guy in awhile back.
He was found INSIDE a Home Depot.

This poor little one had a rough time for a few days... but has recovered.

I admitted 5 Yellow-billed Cuckoos in so far this year.
But unfortunately I screwed up some of my admission forms.....a couple of them being this Cuckoo and two others.... LOL...so I am not sure who rescued which Cuckoos.

I forgot to write some info on the forms....duh.....
So anyway.....I have no names to go with some of the Cuckoo's I admitted.
If you brought me a Cuckoo this year feel free to hold up your hand and tell me about it. :)
These guys are long distance migrants....they fly non-stop over the Gulf Of MEXICO in one night.....heading to South America. Imagine that.
Absolutely dynamite birds....I love these birds.....my favorite
:) :) :)

I got this little one in yesterday....he was a cat attack.
( pictured )
A very nice lady....Terri Meyer found him and rescued him.
She took good care of him until she got him to me.

Thank you Terri :)

I also got ANOTHER Hummingbird in this morning.
( no picture )
It is yet ANOTHER Hummingbird with a fungal infection.
More on this subject later.
Hummingbirds are still out there folks.

These beauties ( Rose -breasted Grosbeaks ) are still stopping by for some chow during migration. I have two that have been at my feeders for the past couple of days.
These guys fly non stop over the Gulf of MEXICO to spend the winter in Central and South America. Very dangerous journey.
Especially in hurricane season....

This little Hummingbird came in with a severe fungal infection. This is the result of feeding from a dirty feeder.
It was found sitting on the ground under a feeder.

After telling the finder what was going on with the bird she said she was guilty of not cleaning her feeders very often.

She asked me not to put her name on here because she was
" ashamed " and sorry.

This little one died....because the infection had already progressed too far by the time I got it.

I also have three other Hummingbirds being treated for the same infection.
They are on medication for this issue.

Giving them the meds that they have to have is a minimum of two weeks and a very unpleasant task for them and me as well.

Nature does not serve up unhealthy dangerous bacteria filled food for these little ones............
Humans are the ones dishing that out.

This is sad and very preventable.
They come to our feeders unaware that some feeders are serving them harmful and lethal "food" that is going to make them sick and kill them.

PLEASE keep your feeders clean.
CLEAN them....don't be someone who causes these little ones to suffer a miserable death.
Promise to do better next year and take care of these Hummingbirds.

I certainly hope these two Hummingbirds are the last ones that I admit for the year.
Here is hoping the majority are all well on their way to their wintering grounds.
They have a very dangerous and exhausting non stop flight across the Gulf of MEXICO
Both of these birds came in on Sept. 30th.
Thank you Sue Pettigrew for rescuing this little one...( photo )
And thank you Cathy Shafer for rescuing the other little one...

The Hummingbirds are still coming in.
I got this little one in a couple of days ago.
A very nice lady ( Ruth Bolls ) rescued this one...
and her sister Mary drove over 2 hours one way to bring him to me.
Thank you Ruth and Mary.
Leave your feeders up.....they are still here. I still have them coming to my feeders.

I just got this little Pine Warbler in a little while ago.
Apparently he likes my cooking.....
That was his emergency course...
Bugs are up next.

A very nice gentleman ( Toby ) found him on the road and rescued him.
Toby also went above and beyond trying to make this little warbler as comfortable as possible while he tried to find help.

When he brought the bird to me it was in a box with a soft cloth...and handwarmers on top of the cloth ...and then another soft cloth on top of the warmers....and then the bird snuggled down in that.
I noticed that he had the box on his car seat with a seatbelt wrapped around the box to secure it.
Toby said he tried to drive as careful as possible so that the bird did not get hurt.
Don't you just love guys like that ?
I do.
Thank you very much Toby...for caring and helping. :)

Migration was really heavy last night.....and birds are facing a long difficult journey.

I got this little one in yesterday. Yes...another one.
Tina Gibson was in Walmart and saw something on the floor and looked closer and realized that it was a Hummingbird.
She picked him up and took him home.
Unfortunately these guys get into all kinds of trouble.
Poor little one is not doing well.
Thank you for rescuing him Tina..
