RODEO 101: BARREL RACING

Speed. Precision. A whole lot of horsepower.

Barrel racing is the women's event of pro rodeo. Three barrels are set up in a cloverleaf pattern, and the rider runs the pattern as fast as she can. Knock a barrel over and you get a 5 second penalty, which is usually enough to end your run.

Top times at PRCA rodeos are often decided by less than a tenth of a second. It's a partnership between rider and horse where every step, every cue, and every turn matters.

Few events bring the crowd to its feet like a fast barrel run.

RODEO 101: TIE-DOWN ROPING

A throwback to the working cowboy.

Tie-down roping is one of the oldest events in rodeo, born from ranch work where cowboys had to rope and treat calves quickly out in the pasture.

In the arena, the cowboy chases down a calf, ropes it, dismounts, lays it on its side, and ties any three legs together with a short piece of rope called a "piggin' string." The calf must stay tied for 6 seconds for the time to count. Top times are around 7 seconds total.

Fast, technical, and rooted in real ranch life.
