West Bend Winterland: the story
A group of business leaders in the community thought of an idea for a winter event in Claremore and got together to share the vision. How great would it be for the community to be able to come together during the holidays and enjoy ice skating, a Christmas tree and feel the nostalgia of the season. That group of people worked for many months bringing together people and funding to make this happen.
We wanted it to be affordable so everyone can enjoy! The first part of that was choosing a synthetic skating surface instead of real ice. With disbelief we learned that the cost for real ice is hundreds of thousands of dollars with the chillers, water lines, and everything needed to keep the ice.. well ice in Oklahoma weather. The Rogers County Coalition partnered with the City of Claremore to purchase the synthetic rink. It’s ours! It was going to cost as much to rent a rink and skates as it was to buy it. Now it’s ours and we can make it bigger next year (already planning on it) and add more skates so we can try to accommodate everyone’s sizes. It’s hard pressed to find an activity you can go do for only $5 for an adult and 2 kids to participate. We didn’t want anyone left out so we made it as cheap as we could while still paying for all our expenses including the lights, decorations and everything else it takes to make an event happen.
The committee putting on West Bend Winterland isn’t making a bunch of money from this. We reached out to non-profit organizations in the community to see if they wanted to help us out for all of the public skate nights that we have. So every night that you are attending and paying to skate is helping a local non-profit. They get $3 of every $5 skate ticket that’s made on their night. The holidays are a time to make memories with your family, enjoy Christmas activities and help those who may not have anything.
When you come out to Winterland this holiday season make memories, start new traditions, and remember Claremore is a great place to be.
