Twenty-five teachers attended a workshop on September 23, 2026, Teaching the Northwest Territory and integrating the Science of Reading and the Ohio Integrated Curriciulum Model provided by the Nathaniel Massie Chapter and funded through a grant from the Ohio History Connection. The project was a collaboration among the Nathaniel Massie Chapter, The Ross County Historical Society, and OHIO University Chillicothe. Presenters were Terressa Reep, Regent of Nathaniel Massie DAR, Andrew Hall, Director of the Ross County Historical Society, and Dr. John O'Keefe, Professor Ohio University.

The teachers were guided through reading primary source material written in the 18th century, how to present these materials, and use the activities in their fifth grade through high school classes. Social Studies and Language Arts teachers collaborated in creating lesson plans where each were able to integrate skill sets from their respective subject into the other, allowing students to receive instruction showing and applying the relationship among school subjects and real world experiences.

Substitutes for the teachers and graduate credits for those attending were paid for by a grant awarded to the Nathaniel Massie Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution by the Ohio History Connection.

The class was held at the Ross County Historical Society Museum, which the teachers enjoyed and learned from the Ohio Statehood exhibit and other exhibits about early Ohio throughout the museum. Teachers were very appreciative of the content and the time to collaborate with each other.

Nathaniel Massie Chapter had a busy day Saturday. Our ninth America 250 Ross County event, History of Baseball in Ross County welcomed Dr. Chris Hanners, owner of the Paints collegiate league. Dr Hanners invited us onto the field to explain construction and maintenance along with the rich history of the game.

Following the presentation we moved to the Veterans Healing Garden for the planting of Ross County’s Liberty Tree. The chapter helps maintain the garden and it is a perfect place for the tree to provide shade for our veterans. HODAR Doug Fabrey was a big help with the shoveling!!
