Tonight!!!!!

The 42nd Chicago Latino Film Festival may be over but there are still plenty of Latin American and Spanish films playing in local festivals and theaters to watch!

One of them is A CHILD OF MY OWN (UN HIJO PROPIO), presented as part of DOC10 this Friday May 1st at 8:00 p.m. at the Davis Theater.

From two-time Oscar nominated director Maite Alberdi ("The Mole Agent," "The Eternal Memory") comes this engaging stranger-than-fiction story about a woman, desperate to be a mother, who faked her own pregnancy and attempted to have a baby. Based on a real incident that took place in Mexico in 2009, the film tells the story of Alejandra, who after multiple miscarriages, lied to her hopeful husband that she was finally having their child. Even after months of sustaining the complex charade—from obstetrician visits to a baby shower—Alejandra appeared to have figured it all out. Or did she? This unique hybrid of drama and documentary gives sensitivity and nuance to the story, transforming a scandalous act into a touching and complex portrait of motherhood, sisterhood, and family.

The 42nd Chicago Latino Film Festival is officially in the history books — and what a Festival it was!

From Opening Night to the final credits, the 2026 edition made its mark as the most attended festival post pandemic, proving once again that the hunger for authentic Latino stories on the big screen has never been stronger.

To every filmmaker, sponsor, volunteer, and — most importantly — every single person who bought a ticket, passport and merchandise and showed up: THANK YOU!!!!! You are the Festival. See you at the 43rd.

This is it!

The last full day of screenings!.

One last chance to see on the big screen I AM FRANKELDA, Mexico’s first feature-length stop motion animation film that received the blessing of none other than Guillermo Del Toro; to meet award-winning Guatemalan filmmaker Jayro Bustamante who is in town presenting his new film CORDILLERA DE FUEGO; to be knocked out of your socks by deaf actress Miriam Garlo’s Goya-winning performance as a mother dealing with the challenges of bringing up a baby in a hearing world in DEAF (SORDA); and Juanjo Pereira’s eye-opening collage of documentaries, films and recordings about the Alfredo Stroessner dictatorship in UNDER THE FLAGS, THE SUN.

Thank you for making this and our Opening Night event an amazing success. It was the first time we tried this new approach to both events and we are so grateful for your support!

We have two more full days of screenings before our Closing Night presentation of THE DOG, MY FATHER AND US (NOSOTROS, MI PAPÁ Y EL PERRO) Monday night. (Tickets are selling fast!). The action starts this afternoon at 1 p.m. with a final screening of Ricardo De Montreuil's MISTURA starring Bárbara Mori.

So, whether it's the tender story of a grandfather who has to take care of his estranged granddaughter (DE TAL PALO), a thirteen-year-old forced to move to a German colony in 1950s Chile where strange disappearances are taking place (THE EVIL THAT BINDS US), or the story of a teen who processes the sudden death of her grandmother by wearing her dresses (FORASTERA), there is something for everyone today at the Landmark's Century Centre Cinema.
