A 1950s Chevrolet 210 with a story.
Nostalgia… what is it?
Nostalgia is more than remembering the past. It’s the feeling tied to moments, people, music, places… and sometimes, cars.
This photo takes me back to growing up in Englewood. Back then, the boys spent hours around their cars — helping each other solve problems, fixing engines, sharing tools, laughing, learning, and building friendships. The cars represented freedom, pride, creativity, and passion.
In this photo, my brother Julio sits on top of the car, Luis lays across the hood, Cesar leans against the driver’s side door, Eddie sits on the hood, Joey stands behind him, and Edwin sits on the trunk. None of them probably imagined where life would eventually take them. Two went on to Washburn Trade School, two joined the Navy, my brother became a master carpenter, and Edwin became a mystery through the years.
Since then, my brother’s ashes have been spread in places he loved to visit — here and in countries he cherished — and Joey now rests at Arlington National Cemetery with full honors.
That is what makes the car show nostalgic for me.
Every person proudly showcasing their car on June 5th has a story connected to it. Maybe it reminds them of their youth, a loved one, hard work, sacrifice, friendship, family, or a dream they chased.
The cars may shine… but the stories shine even brighter.
