The competition process:
1. The venues posted their briefs at www.30secondsoverchicago.com. Venues included links to their favorite bands that might be featured in their ad. The competition website launched on Wednesday, September 25.
2. Local filmmakers & copywriters will read the briefs and post their “pitches” on each venue's contest-page. Creatives may also include links to their portfolios. Both professionals and amateurs are welcome to "pitch." The last day to pitch is Sunday, November 3rd, ending at midnight.
3. Each venue will read through their pitches and pick their favorite idea. The picks will be announced on Wednesday, November 6th.
4. Selected creatives will have about one month to build their team and make their ad. There is no production budget. The ads are due on Sunday, December 8 at 7pm. We’ll then take all of the ads to the Double Door for the premiere & finals (Tuesday, December 10 at 8pm). The ads will be judged by three creative directors from Chicago ad agencies, joined with audience votes to decided the winners. First place is $1000, second is $350, and third place is $150. There is no cost to the venues except that they offer the filmmaker who makes their ad a "thank you" bar/ticket credit of $150. Also, the venues will own their ad to use however they wish in the future. All commercials will receive one free month of pre-rolling on the live & archived streams of Gigity.TV, plus, and all ads will be featured permanently on the Gigity.TV Sponsor’s Map. This competition is affiliated with Gigity.TV, whose mission is to live stream and video archive Chicago culture. Over the last year we produced events that made 30-second spots for 30 Wicker Park small businesses, and 32 Chicago craft breweries. You can watch all of these ads on the Gigity.TV Sponsor’s Map, http://gigity.tv/gigity_sponsors.php. Thank You,

Every year the Chicago alumni association of MIT holds a business-plan competition and they invited me to present on an idea of helping those who normally beg for money to instead work as freelancers in the picking up of litter, and where you, good citizen, donate directly to that person via the smartphone app. It's called pickupwork.org and the ten finalists present on Tuesday, May 20th, at 6pm at the Civic Opera House. It's $20 for friends, but they serve free drinks. Thanks. http://www.mitefchicago.org/

I was recently put in contact with the founder of a new website called www.ApolloMusicStore.com that aims to license the original music of artists for use in television and radio commercials. They are seeking Chicago bands/songwriters to submit two mp3s to [email protected] by Thursday, April 10th. The listening party will then be at the Wit Hotel on Wed, April 16th, from 5 to 8pm, and will be curated by Steve Lillywhite (5-time Grammy Award winning producer ~ Rolling Stones, Pogues, Morrissey, Peter Gabriel, Talking Heads etc), and a cadre of creative directors and music supervisors from all of Chicago's ad agencies. If an ad agency picks your song for something, you get paid, plus the free exposure. I understand too that not every musician wants to do this with their art, I wanted though to extend the offer, and wish everyone the best. Thanks, Rich

Special thanks to the judges Brian Ferber, Susie Shaw and Michael Starcevich for their constructive criticism on the craft of copywriting and filmmaking, The Double Door (Nate, Jesse, Marc, June), Justin Smith (web designer), Oliver Holmberg (Gigity.TV biz partner), the 36 venue owners & staff, last night's audience (306 people!), the Chicago Portfolio School that feeds this competition so much creative talent, the musicians who lent us their music...

And most importantly, the filmmakers who breathed soul into this competition. They all did a superb job of capturing the unique personality of each venue as together we make Chicago's music scene more vibrant, and a gift to the world.

Our mission with 30 Seconds Over Chicago & Gigity.TV is to create meaningful entertainment and technology that will re-inspire the way people engage the arts, and that will enhance the culture and economies of our communities. Thank you, everyone, for helping us in our mission, and for giving us this opportunity to serve you, and to create this magical event.

30 Seconds Over Chicago is an advertising club of Chicago creatives, and this Fall we're creating 30-second ads for 43 Chicago music venues. :
