Chicago Swing Dance Society

Chicago Swing Dance Society CSDS is the UChicago swing dance RSO! We provide social dances and lessons for all. We have two weekly events: our lessons, and our weekend Java Jive.

Upcoming events are posted on this page and emailed out weekly on our listserv (the University of Chicago Mailing List for CSDS). The Java Jive, so named due to its original coffee shop venue, is held almost every Saturday evening in Ida Noyes Hall on the campus of the University of Chicago. It features a beginner's lesson in East Coast Swing, followed by several hours of dancing with a DJ. Admiss

ion is always free, even to those who have no University affiliation. For the sake of safety we generally do not allow aerials. Our lessons are held once a week in the evening. There are generally two sequences of lessons taking place during a week, and both lessons are an hour long and take place back to back. The lesson sequences usually last 4 or 10 weeks with one lesson a week, and cost $5 per lesson. We generally offer one sequence in beginner to intermediate East Coast Swing dancing, sometimes taught by a University student and board member of CSDS, and one sequence on a different dancing style taught by a professional instructor (examples include Blues, Lindy Hop, and Charleston). Aside from our weekly events the CSDS often hosts special themed dances which usually feature other amenities such as free food and drink, a larger venue, decorations, or a live band. For rules and policies concerning our events, please see the relevant Note on this page. To receive updates on all of these events, you can request to join our email listhost or watch for announcements on this page.

It was great to see all of you who came to our Intermediate Lindy Hop and Beginner Charleston lessons last night! I've updated the event page to include a link to the short videos Neil assigned as homework for this week. Take some time to give them a watch before next week, and don't forget to keep on dancing in the meantime!

All future videos, links, or assignments from our lesson series will be posted as edits to the original Facebook event page for the classes.

UPDATE ON CSDS ACTIVITIES FOR EARLY 2022

As some of you may know, the University of Chicago has delayed the start of winter quarter and switched to online classes for the first two weeks of the term due to the current COVID surge and the spread of the omicron variant. Student organizations have been asked to conduct all activities remotely during this time.

In light of these developments, and in the interests of the health and safety of our students and community members, there will be no classes or Java Jives in 2022 until January 24 at the earliest. We are closely monitoring the COVID situation and will follow UChicago, City of Chicago, and CDC guidance as to if and when in-person events should be resumed.

We’ll provide further updates as soon as we have them. In the meantime, we encourage you all to do your part in helping us resume dancing together by getting vaccinated and boosted as soon as possible.

Stay safe!

Individuals who are NOT affiliated with the University of Chicago (non-UCID holders):
1. You must show one of the following:
- Proof of full vaccination for COVID-19 (14 days after the last dose an FDA or WHO-approved vaccine; approved vaccines are: AstraZeneca, Covishield/Serum Institute of India, Janssen/Johnson & Johnson, Moderna, Pfizer/BioNTech, Sinopharm, and Sinovac)

2. You must fill out the non-UCID-holder registration form to attend. Please sign up individually.
3. Please be prepared to PRESENT PROOF OF YOUR VACCINATION/COVID TEST (or a picture/digital copy) and A VALID ID at the door. We reserve the right to deny participation to anyone who violates these policies.

**Starting in October of 2022, individuals who have attended a CSDS event occurring on October 1st or later and presented proof of vaccination along with a matching valid ID once will not be required to bring proof of vaccination to subsequent events, so long as you present a matching valid ID. For all individuals who have NOT attended a CSDS event on October 1st or later, you will still be required to present both proof and ID (see section below).

All individuals:
1. Are recommended to wear a mask. (see note below)
2. Must affirm they have read and understood our Code of Conduct and complete a health affirmation form before entering the dance.
To protect you:
1. We will provide wristbands of two colors. One will indicate that attendees feel comfortable being asked to dance by someone whom they do not know. The other will indicate that they are not comfortable with this and that they should not be asked to dance.
2. Time will be allowed between songs to use hand sanitizer.
3. Barring inclement weather, we will keep the windows of the venue open.
Finally, the University of Chicago requires us to include the following statement in any official communication.
This convening is open to all invitees who are compliant with UChicago vaccination requirements and, because of ongoing health risks, particularly to the unvaccinated, participants are expected to adopt the risk mitigation measures (masking and social distancing, etc.) appropriate to their vaccination status as advised by public health officials or to their individual vulnerabilities as advised by a medical professional. Public convening may not be safe for all and carries a risk for contracting COVID-19, particularly for those unvaccinated. Participants will not know the vaccination status of others and should follow appropriate risk mitigation measures.

**NOTE ON MASKING: As of March 4, 2022, UChicago has gone mask-optional in non-academic spaces. We acknowledge that the pandemic is in a period of ebb right now. However, many people remain at risk for severe illness. CSDS seeks to cultivate a community based on mutual care and respect. Consequently, while we no longer require individuals to wear a face mask, we request that all attendees respect the safety of their dance partners and those around them. Please ensure that you are aware of what your partner is comfortable with, especially considering their choice to mask.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us through our page or by sending an email to [email protected].
