Why Do We Burn?
Fire has always been a natural part of Illinois’ prairies, and today, land managers use prescribed burns to keep our natural areas healthy and thriving.
🔥 Fire Benefits the Land 🔥
• Restores the Soil – Burning returns essential nutrients to the ground, enriching the soil for future plant growth.
• Helps Native Plants Thrive – Many prairie seeds need fire to break down tough seed coats or clear out dead plant material so sunlight can reach the soil.
• Controls Invasive Species – Non-native plants that outcompete our native species often struggle to survive fires, giving native plants the upper hand.
• Creates Habitat for Wildlife – By clearing out dense undergrowth, burns create open space and fresh plant growth that benefits birds, insects, and other wildlife.
Illinois prairies evolved with fire—before human intervention, lightning and Indigenous communities played a key role in maintaining these ecosystems. Without fire, prairies become overgrown with shrubs and trees, eventually losing their unique biodiversity.
So if you see a controlled burn happening in a local natural area, know that it’s all part of keeping Illinois’ landscapes healthy!
