smiling rock gallery was started to build community and promote accessibility in the art world. Our initial collection consisted solely of second-hand artwork acquired in the Chicago-land area (which we affectionately refer to as “SHart”). Each piece of SHart was inherently unique, even those that were reproductions. Many show nicks, dents, or other signs of wear. It gave them character. It inspired questions like “where have you been, what have you seen?” We’d connect the dots whenever possible, playing art-detective was always fun. Some pieces were painted by listed artists, others by a student for their 5th grade art project. But inside the gallery our SHart took on different meaning. Each visitor could become part of a new story, restoring context to what was once forgotten/misunderstood. We didn’t tell you what to think or why you should think it. We didn’t care if you “got it”, and frankly neither should you! Art is about connection, imagination, empathy. It’s a language we’re all capable of speaking. It doesn’t require fancy words or an education, but an eagerness to find meaning where it isn’t inherent. That’s what we were all about: leaving no stone unturned, bc one may smile back. Thank you so much for being part of our journey. Its been a while since our last exhibition so it’s with a heavy heart that we’re announcing a more permanent hiatus (not to say the gallery will never return). But as a farewell, we’re declaring July SHart month (think prime day but with SHart). Still tons of pieces available and it all has to go. Everything will be negotiable/priced to move. Will be posting pieces regularly, first come first serve. Just comment or message us for details, to set up a viewing, or just say hello 😊 If you got this far, thanks for reading! Stay tuned
