Intern shoutout to Dellah! She recently started her 2nd year coursework in our internship program and is working on group lesson teaching skills. Today’s topic was cooling out a hot horse. She had to get creative on a cool windy day when horses weren’t hot 😆 Students had fun and learned some new information to add to their toolboxes. Great job, Dellah!

Versatile Horsemanship.

This is photo at Fiesta. The horse I’m riding, Cimmerron, is a National Champion Vaulting horse, now is used for lessons in Western, English, Jumping. He loves working cows and every age of rider can ride him.

This is our specialty at JT Ranch. We love helping horses and riders be versatile. They all have their gifts but with solid training and being open, willing and soft they are safe and are comfortable doing whatever the rider wants.

Where is your focus?

Horsemanship is about having a horse listen to our seat, leg, and rein aids together. This gelding you can see is complaining by swishing his tail and swinging his head and I stay consistent in my aids until you can see in the end where he becomes soft and less resistant. We often try to “fix”when we’re asking our horse for things so it’s more like you’re putting out fires versus staying consistent with your seat leg and rein aids. Once the horse learns to be obedient to the aids he has a solid foundation. When you’re not focused on the head, all of those things will come eventually as a horse finds softness in body and mind and moves his feet.

What is horsemanship?

Horsemanship came and was necessary during times of war. Horses and humans had innate trust in each other to keep each other safe! Wow.

Horsemanship now is more like you do this and you do that. How is trust created in this scenario?

Trust starts with leadership. Leadership of yourself and then leadership of the horse. Horses mainly act out when they don’t have strong leadership. We teach our students from day 1 about leadership of themselves first. Then of the horse.
