Another fabulous collaboration with scenic designers this time we got to build the weathered and battered set for Mother Russia at this extremely detailed little set packed a lot into it a small space. One of the great qualities of this design is the play in material of what’s real and what’s fake. The goal is always to make these carefully crafted representations of objects look effortless next to “real” objects and materials. With any dots design there is always a clever little wink and a smile in the design letting the audience in on the joke that this is all a fabrication, built to be enjoyed.

Our first special, designed by for Live + In the Flesh filmed at The Bell House in Brooklyn, New York. The special features Squirm’s signature style of “bodily fluids, open-wound confessionals, and jokes that will leave skid marks on the soul” And if that wasn’t enough the one and only John Waters makes a cameo! Everyone in the shop had fun bringing this rather insane creation to life!

We are thrilled to be part of the success of Meet the Cartozians, now performing off-Broadway at the Pershing Square Signature Center. theater critic Juan A. Ramírez described the production as “The best I’ve seen all year” and praised the set as “note-perfect”—and we have to agree! Big congratulations to Scenic Designer and the entire team! This past summer we had the pleasure of building part of the set for Camino Real at starring and Frankie Alvarez. Our shop handled the large upstage walls which included a rough center opening creating a doorway with custom “glass” door. Our most recent set with the for their production of Verdi’s opera Macbeth with Scenic Designer The huge semi circular set complete with hidden doors and “dirt” floor cloth concealed an exciting secret for the audience in that it cracked open and separated at the end of the show revealing a forest of trees upstage. We were saddened to hear on Broadway would be closing on June 29. Upstate Scenic built a handful of items for the Broadway run of Dead Outlaw including two custom autopsy tables! Dead Outlaw was nominated this season for 7 the musical was conceived by David Yazbek, with Scenic Design by Arnulfo Maldonado and Directed by David Cromer. Production 📸 Mathew Murphy

Some projects are fun from start to finish and Grangeville was one of those projects! Produced at with Scenic Design collective The concept for the main set was a “life-size” model box, creating a slightly off, slightly out of scale room. If you look closely, nothing is exactly as it seems.
