To every community, city, space and family that the LAVAGEM Celebration touched this year, we give thanks❣️ We thank you all for your presence, for your sharing, for all of our Master Teachers, for our youth and our elders, for everyone's willingness to dive deep and support. We thank those who have been with us for 5 years strong and those who participated for the very first time. We give thanks to everyone that traveled, some hundred or even thousands of miles to meet us in Durham for Embodied Dialogues, or Charlotte, Baltimore or Philly for the LAVAGEM Celebration. We celebrate you all and celebrate those who wanted to be there, but couldn't- we held you close in spirit and dance!

We celebrate a momentous achievement! Having an annual festival for five years, in the midst of major changes in financial support and socioeconomical challenges is no easy feat, but we pushed forward!

There are a few that started with us in 2022 who are no longer with us and we celebrate their lives and legacies as well. 🕊️🕊️🕊️

We hope that you continue to take this charged, ancestral energy with you throughout the year until we meet next time in Charlotte for the LAVAGEM Celebration, April 8-11, 2026!
Don't forget to mark your calendars!! 🗓️

Muito Obrigado Axé!! 🫶🏿🙏🏿❤️🌻👑

We're still going!! Join Shelby tonight at the Tuckaseegee Recreation Center at 6:30pm!

About Shelby:
Shelby Cristea is a dancer and movement guide who lives at the intersection of rhythm and wellness. With a deep love for dances across the African Diaspora, especially foundational Hip Hop and Jazz. She uses movement as a way to process life by bringing a psychology background into the studio. Shelby focuses on creating a space for genuine confidence building and emotional release. Their classes are designed to help you shake off the weight of the day and "re-describe" your internal story through the body. Through her class, Shelby strives to help facilitate finding a sense of community, reclaiming your flow, and using every beat to feel a little more bold and a lot more like yourself.

What does it mean to hold memory in our bodies? Remembering and practicing our ancestral memories through rhythms, songs, gestures, dance, vibrations, and body alchemies of transformation. This is our strength, our pride, our resistance, our language our unity, our life. We honor the intelligence and wisdom of those who came before through each moment of practice today.

Grateful to Mestre Zé Ricardo for sharing and reminding us of the responsibility of not just playing, or dancing, but of knowing and studying.

Embodied Dialogues at Duke University provides space for reflection and analysis. Thank you again to Ava LaVonne Vinesett for this 5 year partnership, to the students, Duke community and musicians 🫶🏿

Our fifth year of Embodied Dialogues at Duke University. This year, investigates Memory Work and Body Landscaping. What does it mean to preserve history in the body, in our voice, vibration, being? How do I tell the stories of my grandmother and great grandmother... of our truth through dance? Stories that were otherwise forbidden or untruthfully told in unjust ways. I investigate how this body shows up today in our society and have the strength, joy, pain, and affirmation to continue moving through. 💫

Grateful to Ava LaVonne Vinesett for this powerful collaboration since day one and for her efforts, resilience, and determination for the continuation of this work! 🙏🏿 Many thanks to the musicians, the community of Durham, os Mestres and all who show up, Jenise who always gets the work done behind closed doors, and to our mighty ancestors who are never forgotten. May our work continue to be elevated and uplift every person in our spaces.
