Then & Now: Queen’s Courtyard 🏰

Looking at these photos side by side, it’s amazing how much of the Queen’s Courtyard has stood the test of time. From the stone archways to the courtyards welcoming layout, many of the features guests enjoy today remain much as they were during the John VanHaver era (1962-1969).

One notable addition is the fountain at the center of the courtyard. Built by John VanHaver, it is fed by an artesian well that flows 365 days a year at a constant 40-degree temperature. While the fountain itself wasn’t part of the original courtyard, the well has long been a natural feature of the property.

Over the decades, the Queen’s Courtyard has evolved while preserving the historic charm that makes Castle Farms so special. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning after many years, you’re experiencing a space that has welcomed guests for generations!

While Mother Nature had other plans, you rolled with the rain, moved indoors with us, and made “The Goonies” a fun night to remember!

We truly appreciate your flexibility, enthusiasm, and support! We can’t wait to do it all again next month when we adventure into “Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle”!

Rain or shine, Movies on the Lawn is happening TONIGHT!!!

We’re planning to enjoy the movie outside under the stars, but if the rain decides to join us, we have an indoor backup location ready to go! No matter what Mother Nature has planned, the show will go on!☀️🌧️

We believe the stone perched atop the WWI Museum may be meant to represent an anvil: a tool commonly used by blacksmiths when this building served as a blacksmith shop many years ago!🪨

Anvils were an essential part of a blacksmiths trade, providing a sturdy surface for shaping, flattening, bending, and forging hot metal into tools, horseshoes, hardware, and countless everyday items. The ringing sound of a hammer striking anvil would have been a familiar part of daily life here.

While we believe this unique feature may symbolize the building’s blacksmithing past, we’re not entirely certain of its original purpose.
