It is 1690, the scene: Charles Towne harbor. A mysterious vessel has arrived and sits ominously at anchor at Rebellion Road, just outside of cannon range from the port. They don't follow proper customs, which would see them coming closer to state their business...

A local pilot captain has made contact, establishing that this ship is captained by one "George Raynor," and after learning the name of the current governor, they quickly departed from the harbor.

It is later reported that these men, whatever their business may be, abandoned their vessel beyond Isle of Palms, back behind Bull's Island. Most concerning, it is believed that these mysterious sailors have already infiltrated Charles Towne and outlying communities.

The governor, Joseph Blake, has just issued a warning to the people of Charles Towne - Do not entertain or harbor these men, for they may be criminals...

Charleston Under the Black Flag Guest Reveal #10: Eric Lavender! 🏴

Coming May 15th & 16th is Charleston Under the Black Flag 2026 - a two-day experience of pirate history in downtown Charleston at The Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon. This event sees a number of pirate historians, authors, reenactors, divers, and more coming together for a celebration of pirate history in Charleston!

Our tenth guest is pirate historian, author, and tour guide, Eric Lavender! Eric is a pirate staple in Charleston, who has for many years operated the Charleston Pirate Tours downtown, bringing education and awareness of Charleston's history to public alongside his faith macaw companion, Captain Bob. He has also been working on his book, "Charles Vane and Company" detailing the history of the pirate, including his interactions with Charleston.

Eric's been a good friend of mine for years now, and I recommend all who visit Charleston interested in pirates look him up for a great tour downtown. As Tripadvisor user "Steadfastman" stated:

"Fair Warning: If you take any other tour after taking this one, you will be deeply disappointed; because nobody in Charleston does it any better than Pirate Eric Lavender."

Come on out to Charleston Under the Black Flag on Saturday, May 16th, to meet Eric and listen to his 1PM talk regarding Charles Vane and his connection to Charleston's pirate history.

Morrow is a local pirate historian and author who leads the pirate reenactment group, Crew of the Bachelor's Delight. He and his crew travel up and down the southeast coast presenting on pirate history at various history festivals, museums, and historic sites. Morrow also often performs educational presentations for museums, colleges, retirement homes, classrooms, and homeschooling communities. Morrow has published five books on pirate history under the name Captain Marrow, four of which are entries in his "Pirate Ghosts & Buried Treasures" series, which are history books analyzing pirate folklore beliefs and the history behind them, from the Southeast Coast (FL-VA), Northeast Coast (MD-MA), into Atlantic Canada, and the newest entry tackling the remote Cocos Island off Costa Rica. His most Charleston-relevant title, however, is that of "Arabian Gold: Charleston's Red Sea Pirates of 1692," which explores the history of a cutthroat crew that arrived to Charleston during 1692 and bringing with them great wealth from the Arabian Sea.

"Captain Marrow" Is also the event coordinator who orchestrates Charleston Under the Black Flag, in conjunction with the Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon. Reach out to him at his Shipwrecked page to book him for extracurricular pirate history events!

Charleston Under the Black Flag Guest Reveal #7: Christopher Byrd Downey! 🏴

Coming May 15th & 16th is Charleston Under the Black Flag 2026 - a two day experience of pirate history in downtown Charleston at The Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon. This event sees a number of pirate historians, authors, reenactors, divers, and more coming together for a celebration of pirate history in Charleston!

This year we're happy to welcome and host pirate historian and author Christopher Downey! However, please note that Downey will only be present on Friday, and only from 11am-1pm.

Downey comes from a love of history that he put into practice locally in the Charleston-area following the acquisition of a boat, leading him down the path of presenting the public with historical boat tours on Charleston's pirate history. His wealth of knowledge garnered him association with Arcadia Publishing, through which he has published "A History Lover's Guide to Charleston," "Edgar Allen Poe's Charleston," and most notably for this event; "Stede Bonnet: Charleston's Gentleman Pirate," as well as "Charleston and the Golden Age of Piracy."

"Charleston and the Golden Age of Piracy" serves as good primer on the going ons of Charleston's interactions with pirates, from Bonnet, to Blackbeard, to famed pirate-hunter William Rhett.
Byrd has also prepared a presentation during his window of being at the event regarding Edgar Allen Poe and his relation to pirates in the lowcountry.

Also, for those interested, Byrd can be reached out to for walking tours of Charleston.

Come on out to Charleston Under the Black Flag on May 15th & 16th to meet Captain Byrd, and pick up some signed copies!

Charleston Under the Black Flag Guest Reveal #6: The Crew of the Bachelor's Delight! 🏴

Coming May 15th & 16th is Charleston Under the Black Flag 2026- a two day experience of pirate history in downtown Charleston at The Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon. This event sees a number of pirate historians, authors, reenactors, divers, and more coming together for a celebration of pirate history in Charleston!

The Crew of the Bachelor's Delight is a pirate reenactment crew based out of the Charleston area, founded in early 2025 by pirate author and historian Adam Morrow (aka Captain Marrow) of Shipwrecked with Captain Marrow - 2.0, his partner Ava Lin Pence, and Jennifer Mincey. The crew sets up a variety of family-friendly educational displays for the public at many history festivals and historic sites with artifacts and replicas for a hands-on learning experience, who strive to showcase the history of the real-life crew of the Bachelor's Delight/Royal Jamaica that arrived into Charleston during 1692 after adventuring to the far side of the world.

The crew, as well as some tangential associates, also put on a pirate trial performance for Charleston Under the Black Flag as well, taking place at 2pm-3pm in the Old Exchange Building's Great Hall. This performance is a supposition of how things might have gone down upon the crew's 1692 arrival into Charles Towne, followed by a Q&A with the crowd.

Come on out to Charleston Under the Black Flag on May 15th & 16th to meet the crew, and consider seeing their performance on Saturday at 2pm and weigh in from the crowd if these seafaring scoundrels should face the noose for their actions at sea!

Charleston Under the Black Flag Guest Reveal #5: Dan Porter!

This year we're happy to welcome and host Dan Porter; a boat captain, diver, and shipwreck recovery operations director with decades of experience in the industry.

With a career so far of about 40 years, Porter has had firsthand experience diving many Spanish shipwrecks, including the 1622 Nuestra Senora de Atocha off of Key West from which he recovered hundreds of silver coins, a gold bar, eleven very rare gold coins, a six foot long gold chain, and a spectacular gold belt with rubies, diamonds and pearls known as the “Cinta.” It is considered to be one of the most exquisite pieces of jewelry ever recovered from a Spanish galleon. Other noteworthy ships of the period includes the famous 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet scattered along Florida's "Treasure Coast," and the 1656 Nuestra Senora de las Maravillas. As well as many other shipwrecks, pulling up thousands of coins.

You can find Porter at the event with a display of treasure pulled up from the ocean, as well as coins for sale, and with copies of his new book "The San Jose, Anno 1631 Collection, Volume 1;" a visual catalog of the treasures from that wreck. He will also be giving presentations each day on "Historic Shipwreck Recovery!"

Come on out to Charleston Under the Black Flag on May 15th & 16th to meet Dan Porter, pick up signed copies, and maybe walk away with a piece of history!

While attending Charleston Under the Black Flag this year, make sure to tour the dungeon below before leaving! While the The Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon was built between 1767-1771, it is built upon the same grounds that the Watch House stood, located upon the half-moon battery on what used to be the edge of the harbor (located at the center of the map below).

This watch house is where pirate Captain Stede Bonnet, his crew, and the crew of Richard Worley would spend their final days during 1718. Those touring the dungeon will be occupying the same space those pirates were once held, and near the beginning of the guided tour can catch a glimpse as a visible remnant of the old half-moon battery.

Again, Charleston Under the Black Flag takes place on May 15th & May 16th, 2026!
