The only place where cars are banned, still today- and year-round residents drive snowmobiles.
This island is home to so many fantastic historical places that I’ve just included their own website.
So many places to visit on the island! Some of my favorites include the Butterfly House, Ice House BBQ, the Arch, catching a vintage ball game, and riding the bike through the middle of the island. (Most people just bike around the outside)

One of the best out of the way places to visit in the UP. I am often lost for words when walking through here, a certain reverence lays over this ghost town.

On the Garden Peninsula, at the end of a dead-end road along Big Bay de Noc, sits an entire 19th-century town that everybody walked away from in 1891. More than twenty original buildings still stand, and inside the stone blast furnaces the charcoal loaded for the next burn is still sitting where the last shift left it. In 1867 the Jackson Iron Company saw limestone cliffs, endless hardwood and a deep harbor and built a town on the spot. For 24 years about 500 people lived there and the furnaces turned out 229,288 tons of pig iron. Then the forest ran out, some 16,000 acres burned to charcoal, and the company shut it off. The state has stabilized rather than rebuilt it, so what you walk through is the real thing.

Let’s start with Silver Lake Sand Dunes- where you can drive, ride, or surf the sand dunes.
Did you know that the dune buggies used in the past were International Harvester trucks? There is one used for driving tours by Harvester Homecoming still today!

Don’t like sand? How about a chartered fishing trip? There are lots of places along Lake Michigan, from Pentwater to Traverse City, there are many places to choose from.

Speaking of the Cherry Capital- just a short drive away is Torch Lake, where you can (seriously!) be knee deep in the water- and enjoy an ice cream or burger!

Thursday…I was busy. So, now that we are back among civilization (and internet service) this week I want you to think about Hartwick State Forest- this area has some of the best trails amongst old growth pine, a logging museum, which is one of Michigans top products, and a lot more than just camping at this state park. It’s worth a visit!

You asked, and this is a tough one- because there are many fabric stores scattered throughout the state, it is difficult to pick just one! I’m a little partial to a couple of them, usually because I’m looking for specific style of fabrics- like tractors and farm feels. Every single one of them are all fantastic, because who doesn’t want to spend hours looking at the possibilities and patterns? My advice? Go to a store, and ask about other shops nearby- usually they’ll have a shop hop flyer!

Marshall, MI is worth a visit, plan to arrive early, and leave a day or four later, there’s plenty to see in Michigan!

Marshall, Michigan, nearly became the state capital — and this historic Governor’s Mansion is proof of that ambition. Built in 1839 under the direction of local resident James W. Gordon, who would later serve as Michigan’s third governor in 1841, the mansion was intended as the official residence for the state’s executive.

Though Lansing ultimately became the capital in 1847, the mansion remains a remarkable example of Greek Revival architecture, complete with two stories of elegant design, high ceilings, original woodwork, and period moldings.
