A Bit 'O Talent Featuring Living Improverty
With the first ever Bit O Talent happening this coming Friday, I wanted to share more about our featured guest; Living Improverty. Upon walking into their meeting room, you could feel a heightened energy in the space. The game of ‘Yes and’ was already in motion with jokes about their day jobs, using comedy and comradery to unwind from the day. It was easy to tell that these folks have known each other for quite some time. Just like Nick Fury putting together earth’s greatest heroes, every member had the same coach from back in their High School and College days. Troupe leader Harrison spoke highly of Keren Krebs as the original founder of Living Improverty in 2017 bringing together members from different groups.
From old ladies hosting a radio show to improv games such as ‘Buzzer or Bell’, the group is ready to handle anything. “It’s all about taking a prompt from the audience, and twisting it into the unexpected” - . Using short form skits, each member is able to build a vague idea into a full on scene built out of mad libs.
When we hear the word ‘Improv’, most folks will generally think of one very popular show that aired on ABC from 1998 to 2007. Group member Jake, specifically references Drew Carey as his biggest inspiration for wanting to join the world of comedy. The rest of the members lovingly agreed that Jake and Drew Carey have very similar improvisation abilities.
While inspiration for improv and comedy can come from A-list comedians and favorite shows, the group finds it from each other. Improv is a collaborative art form that brings both performers and the audience together. Every show is something completely new. With each member bringing their own unique takes to prompts and games, the outcome will always be different. “We don’t even know what we’re going to do until we do it” member Bryce expressed.
“Improv is an interactive experience, it is a moment where we can all have fun together,” Harrison expressed.
