UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
So you have Unfinished Business at Heartland 100 races. 2025 was a tough year at Heartland 100 races. It was beautiful at the start. But the deceptively cool morning. With clear blue skies soon heated up to one of the warmest October days we've had in a while.
Heartland 100's Signature Sunrise at Battle Creek aid station did not disappoint. Fiery red, yellow and orange burned off the early morning fog. Signaling the warm day ahead for the valiant ultrarunners. By mid-morning temperatures were near 80° and the scant cloud cover gave way to clear blue skies. The Kansas hills, heat and wind on the back country gravel roads of the historic Heartland 100 race course took its toll. Runners that adapted a conservative strategy and slowed their pace for the afternoon, were rewarded with a cool calm evening and pleasant overnight temperatures. Those that did not adapt and pressed on despite the temperatures rising to 85° paid the price. This year we had a 55% finisher rate. Much lower than our usual 70% - 75% finisher rate.
