Black Sheep Comedy returns to The ArtsCenter with three fantastic sketches this Saturday!

Wet Hot Historical Summer takes you back through the pages of history… just not the way you remember it. This half-hour character monologue show gives history’s most iconic figures the chance to tell their side of the story, revealing the moments that textbooks conveniently skipped over. Hear Amelia Earhart grapple with an identity crisis. Follow an outrageously self-obsessed influencer on the Oregon Trail. Watch as George Washington cannot tell a lie… even when he really should. Join us for an evening of historical revisions from the people who lived through it. History class was never quite like this.

One Night Only features a rotating cast of Black Sheep favorites, giving you a chance to see some of your favorite performers share the stage. Each show brings a new lineup and fresh energy. See tonight’s cast – for one night only!

Book Club is an improv show inspired by a book they didn’t read. Each show, a guest shares their thoughts on a recent book they’ve read. They talk about how the book moved them, what stuck with them, and the moral questions it raised. Then they do dumb improv. It’s a book club with no homework!

This weekend! Don’t miss two incredible shows at The ArtsCenter.

Firstly, on Thursday night don’t miss the chance to see New England duo Hildaland as they continue their tour through the southeast!

A contemporary collage of Scottish and American traditional music, Hildaland is a duo that approaches geographic borders as markers of exploration rather than boundaries to be wary of. Fiddle player Louise Bichan, originally from Orkney, Scotland, and mandolinist Ethan Setiawan, originally from Goshen, Indiana, have taken their duo from traditional Scottish roots through to progressive bluegrass and jazz, with music inspired largely by places and the journeys between them, both physical and musical.

Then on Saturday, Pop Up Chorus returns with a special Broadway edition centering the songs from the smash hit musical Hamilton, which is celebrating its 11th year with a national tour now playing at DPAC! Come sing songs from the show with PopUp Broadway here at The ArtsCenter on June 6!

JUST ANNOUNCED: SUNDAY 10/11 8:00 PM — Horse Lords (local support TBD)

Horse Lords were founded in Baltimore, Maryland in 2010; they evolved from the experimental collective Teeth Mountain and began as a trio with drummer Sam Haberman, guitarist Owen Gardner, and bassist Max Eilbacher, soon adding alto saxophonist Andrew Bernstein to the core ensemble. Though Horse Lords grew out of the fertile Baltimore noise and leftfield rock scene, a storied environment for artists and weirdos that has nurtured many an influential outsider band (Lungfish, Matmos), their approach is more omnivorous than the stippled rhythms of instrumental electric rock would indicate.

Across sixteen years of frequent touring, Horse Lords have released ten studio, live, and collaboration albums in addition to a split EP with fellow Baltimoreans Lower Dens, a handful of singles and compilation tracks. For RVNG’s FRKWYS series, the band collaborated with Berlin-based composer Arnold Dreyblatt, a onetime student of La Monte Young and Pauline Oliveros whose just intonation chamber music was a crucial part of the post-Fluxus Downtown New York City environment.

With the relocation of three of the four members to Germany beginning in 2021, the potential for more further creative exploration, and performance opportunities including the Moers Festival (with an 11-piece lineup, interpreting Julius Eastman’s music as well as their own), the interdisciplinary phases of the band’s music was poised for fascinating new directions. The band observes “We are always trying to balance working within the limitations of the quartet and pushing beyond them.

For their second studio album on RVNG Intl., Demand To Be Taken To Heaven Alive!, Horse Lords have followed this notion and augmented the instrumentation, expanding the format slightly to include bass clarinetist Madison Greenstone (TAK Ensemble), trombonist Weston Olencki (Nate Wooley, RAGE Thormbones) and vocalists Nina Guo (Departure Duo) and Evelyn Saylor (Holly Herndon, Caterina Barbieri) across a program of twelve original compositions.
