Geoff Bartley's Open Mic Night at the Cantab Lounge

Geoff Bartley's Open Mic Night at the Cantab Lounge A preeminent Boston open mic night. If you arrive late, you'll almost certainly still get a slot. All players and audience are invited. Play covers? Fine.

CALLING ALL FOLKSINGERS, singer-songwriters, finger-style guitar players, flatpickers, bluesmen, blueswomen, traveling minstrels, balladeers, acoustic rockers, touring and recording artists, traditional and contemporary solos, duos and trios, a cappella singers, musicians and instrumentalists of all styles! EVERY MONDAY NIGHT AT 8:00 our songwriter open mic gets started at the Cantab Lounge in Cen

tral Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts. THE SCENE We are pleased to welcome musicians from all points of the compass. Most open mikers play acoustic guitar and sing songs they've written, but almost anything goes. Instrumentals? Also fine. The level of talent is fairly high and the atmosphere is tolerant. ON ANY GIVEN MONDAY NIGHT there will be young performers trying out new material and polishing their stagecraft; established performers trying out new material or winding down from the road; visiting performers from other states and countries; audience members who come to listen, socialize, sample a beer and maybe order something from the kitchen, plus regulars at the bar.

NPR: So, Mr. Bartley, what can you tell us about your songwriting technique?
Mr. Bartley: My songwriting technique? Yes, well, my songwriting technique, right, well, what I do, see, is... my songwriting technique? Well, basically, without going into the actual nuts and bolts of it... and instead going directly into the conceptual “AHAAA!!!” moment of it, what I basically do, see, is, I take a weak concept and beat it to death.

Hi everybody! People keep telling me that my... our... Monday Night Open Mic (Mike?) at the "World Famous" Cantab Lounge is their favorite. Maybe they're just being nice, but the audience, including the bar crowd, is respectful and supportive. Also, our sound system rarely catches on fire. Show up by 7:45pm any Monday night for the best chance of an early slot. Each open mic musician is asked to contribute $3, which goes to the Cantab to help pay our way. The feature act this coming Monday (7/22) is Lisa Bastoni, who will play from 9:30 to 10:15. Hope to see you! Geoff Bartley

Aspiring players!

Starting next Monday night (10/19), flatpicker Tony Watt will lead a slow jam from 6:00 to 7:30 at the Cantab.

The open mike will start at 8:00 as usual.

Playing fiddle tunes is a gateway to solid skills on any instrument in the bluegrass family and beyond, and slow jams are a great way to learn. Skills learned from Tony will help you no matter what your style.

I invite you to come to the slow jam. I'll be sitting in for sure.

Geoff
ps There will be some kind of charge for Tony's time... won't be more than $5.

January 2014
Dear open mikers everywhere,
Open mics come and go, but ours has endured since December 1991. We start at 8:00pm every Monday night. Open mikers get two songs. First-timers get an Automatic Early Welcome Slot. $3 is requested from each open mic act to help pay our way. There's a Feature Performer or Act from 9:30 to 10:00. I pass the hat for him/her/them. We have a good sound man and a good sound system that rarely catches on fire. Bring take-out (no drinks) at 6:00pm and we'll all eat together. There are several good, inexpensive restaurants on our block and they all provide take-out. Then ask your guitar questions at my FREE 7:00 to 7:30 Guitar Seance. The Cantab is strictly 21+. Hope to see you there.
Your Host,
Geoff Bartley (1948 - ?)
