Small Town Snippets....This is the back of the Byers Telephone Directory, 1930…96 years ago. (The Strasburg Museum has almost all of the local telephone books, and curator Cliff Smith allowed me to make copies of the oldest Byers books…I really appreciate that!). There are 162 telephone numbers, and this includes businesses in Byers and also ranches. These names are still living here, or have relatives here…Ballard, Bitzer, Burton, Caldwell, Calhoun, Carlson, Diedrich, Duryea, Fellows, Gaudot, Gerstenberger, Meredith, Paine, Palmer, Pratt, Price, Ritter, Scott, Stenseth, Steppitus, Todd, Van Matre, Walling. Another snippet will tell you about advertisers on pages 2 and 3. On page 4 you see The White Front Garage, owned and operated by Jim Price of Byers. Brothers Herman and Bill Bitzer built the garage and opened it in 1922…Bill, who was under 24 years old, passed away suddenly and the garage was sold to Mr. Price. The White Front was the first business on old Hiway 40, and you’ve probably been there over the past few years, as it is Shooters in Byers. The Klinger Hardware (built by Bill Klinger) … and I am guessing, so somebody correct me … was the building to the west of the Byers Legion Hall, on the corner. Mr. Klinger also built the Legion Hall. I do know the building in question was a garage, so maybe?? Byers Elevator, managed by Mr. Peterson, is still partially standing…the elevator to the north east of the Byers Park. These were booming businesses, as all our little towns were getting a good start. The best part is the buildings in today’s snippet are still here. Chime in if you are a relative of one of the names mentioned in the beginning. I am a granddaughter of the Fellows family.
