If you can’t make it to the Tossin’ 4 Hope Co****le Tournament to celebrate Hope and her Paw Paw, you can share your thoughts, words of encouragement, and memories of Mike below.

Unofficial Obituary

Michael Robert Boyer, age 69, passed away peacefully under hospice care on October 13, 2025, at his home in Liberty, North Carolina, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born on July 3, 1956, in Florida, United States.

Mike was known for his love of day trips through the North Carolina mountains and for antique shopping with his wife, Sherry. Together, they shared a love of Shar Peis and cats over the years.

During his first marriage to Teresa Gentry, Mike had two children, Robert and Seresa. He later married Sherry, who had a daughter, Nicole, from a previous marriage. When Nicole married Jody, their daughter Taylor was born, and Mike loved his step-granddaughter dearly.

When Robert married Karen, Mike gained a daughter-in-law. When Seresa married Jason, their family grew to include Owen, Connor, and finally Hope.

After Hope was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome at just 11 months old in May 2021, Mike became one of her greatest caregivers and supporters. He helped clean and organize Seresa’s home to make life easier for Hope’s around-the-clock care and attended countless medical appointments — from regular checkups to emergencies.

When Hope’s Make-A-Wish trip to Disney World was approved in 2024, Mike went along as a caregiver and Paw Paw to help ensure the entire family — especially Owen and Connor — could experience the trip of a lifetime together.

Mike supported Hope and raised awareness. Mike was hoping to attend Hope’s Co****le Tournament event. Though he passed before the event, his presence will be felt in every game played that day.

Mike is survived by his mother, Jeannette, and his sister, Susan, both of Washington. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert, and brother, Robert.

Mike will be remembered for his deep love for his family, his dependable heart, and his quiet strength. He will be missed deeply by all who knew and loved him — especially his grandchildren, who were his greatest joy.

A memorial table will be set up at Tossin’ 4 Hope on October 26, 2025, beginning at 2:00 PM, at 7157 Shoe Road, Burlington, NC 27215, where friends and family can share memories and words of encouragement in honor of Mike.

Per Mike’s wishes, in lieu of flowers, please consider supporting his granddaughter, Hope, whose medical needs were so close to his heart.

Donations may be sent to 161 Glenfield Lane, Burlington, NC 27215.

This photo is me and my niece Hope. It was taken at the 2nd Annual Putting 4 Hope Putt-Putt Fun Center in Burlington in 2022.

At this time two years ago I approached the former owner of Putt-Putt and what transformed into Putting 4 Hope.

Having myself a neurological developmental disorder since birth, Rett syndrome research will benefit what I went through as an undiagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorder patient up to my 39 years, 3 month of life with my previous 1988 diagnosed underlying conditions of speech impairments and writing impairments under specific learning disability, central auditory processing disorder, fine and gross motor skills impairments and ADHD. I know Rett syndrome research will help with conditions such as autism and other neurological developmental conditions. Under the field of neurology, research for other conditions will benefit in some degree for general neuroscience.

People who have suspected or is diagnosed with a neurological developmental conditions will in some degree have an understanding with each other. It’s a bond of acceptance of being in a neurological group of developmental disorders that can relate to each other in some degree due to similar impairments no matter the person’s severity. If you observe people who may have these neurological developmental conditions, or diagnosed with these conditions, you can see their special bond for each other when they interact.

For Hope’s condition, who has one of the worse mutations that causes Rett syndrome, she may not have a “normal” voice, but her eyes shows her intelligent mind. She is only trapped within her body, but she feels, likes and understands her surroundings the best way she can. It’s just hard to figure out what ills her, discomforts her and what she is thinking a majority of the time. It is like having a infant child or dementia patient forever by trying to pinpoint issues that come up.

The reality of Hope’s condition of caring for her or seeing her in-person is felt more strongly. Posts like updates on Hope4Hope that includes descriptions, photos and videos do not do Hope’s condition justice. Being in her presence in-person gives you a better painted picture of her restrictions and limitations. Once you meet her in person, there is an instant connection, especially if you have any neurological developmental condition.

Putting 4 Hope is all about Hope’s special needs of healthcare. We get some of those funds from this annual event that our family does each October, which Rett Syndrome Awareness Month is every October.

Hope is one of about 4,500 officially diagnosed with Rett syndrome in the United States, but the estimated of the overall Rett syndrome population is between 6,000 to 9,000. Globally the overall population is estimated around 350,000. That is like having two Alamance Counties with an estimated population one Alamance County of 173,877 (2021) times two around the globe.
