As part of THD’s Friday Forum Guest Dance Artists program, Evan Matthew Stewart will provide a guest master class on Friday, September 18, 2026.

EvanMatthew Stewart, a native of Buffalo, NY, received his dance training from David DeMarie Dance Studio (Buffalo, NY), Royal Academy of Ballet (Buffalo, NY), and Joffrey School of Ballet (NYC). He then proceeded to earn his BFA in dance and minor in counseling from the University at Buffalo.

Evan is currently living and working in New York City and was an ensemble dancer for the Radio City Rockettes Christmas Spectacular holiday season 2023. Evan was a senior member of the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company, an Asian American modern dance company. He has also had the opportunity to work with Ebony Williams performing for her at Jacob’s Pillow and was also a dancer in the film “In the Heights” directed by Jon Chu and choreographed by Chris Scott.

As part of THD’s Friday Forum Guest Dance Artists program, Kayla McSorley will provide a guest master class called “HEELS” on Friday, September 18, 2026.

Kayla McSorley (she/her) is a French-Canadian Performer, Educator and Arts Administrator from Ottawa, ON. She is a graduate of Niagara University, NY, where she received a BFA in Theatre Performance and a BA in French. Since acquiring her degree, she has performed, taught and toured internationally accumulating a versatile skill set.

Some of Kayla’s favorite acting credits include SIX The Musical (Boleyn/Cleves/Parr), Janice (Come From Away), The Last Five Years (Cathy), Comedy of Errors (Luciana/Duke) and Julius Caesar (Brutus). Having been a teaching artist, coach and choreographer for many years, her passion for education has also led to on and off stage credits with Missoula Children’s Theatre, Artishow, The Travelling Stage, Carousel Players, Little Red Theatre and Canada’s Wonderland.

As a respected and kind professional in the field, the aforementioned experience went hand in hand with taking on administrative leadership positions such as General Manager/Art Coordinator (Pirate Life Children’s Theatre), Program Coordinator/ Instructor (International Musicals Taiwan), Coordinator of Volunteers (Ottawa Fringe Festival), Site Manager/Art Specialist (Just For Kids Buffalo) and now Executive Assistant (Theatre of Youth).

With a passion for treating artists with respect and offering equal opportunity to all, Kayla is excited to continue striving to provide memorable experiences to the upcoming and current generations of the Buffalo Theatre Community!

“Wolf Play” centers on Jeenu, a young Korean boy whose life is upended when his adoptive father, Peter, arranges for him to live with Robin and her spouse, Ash. After learning more about Jeenu's new home, Peter begins to question the decision and seeks to reinsert himself into the child's life. As Jeenu navigates this transition, his thoughts, fears, and instincts are voiced through Wolf, a theatrical figure who serves as both storyteller and embodiment of the boy's inner world.

Through a blend of humor, heightened theatricality, and emotional drama, the play examines what it means to belong to a family. As Ash, a devoted boxer, develops a deep connection with Jeenu, conflicts arise among the adults over responsibility, love, and parental rights. The story ultimately explores identity, attachment, and the often-complicated ways people seek connection, security, and acceptance.

Ty Burgess (they/he) is an actor and playwright based in the Buffalo area and a senior pursuing a BFA in Acting at the University at Buffalo. Their recent credits include “Macbeth” (Macbeth), “Urinetown” (Hot Blades Harry), “The Pajama Game” (Vernon Hines), and Shakespeare Showcase (Co-Director). As a playwright and theatre artist, Ty is passionate about creating new works, q***r performance and devised theatre. Upcoming projects include the premiere of their original play, “Chrysalis” in the second half of the Theatre and Dance 2026-2027 production season.

Q: The play seems to explore what makes a family beyond biology or legal definitions. How does Ash fit into that conversation?

A: Ash is such an interesting character related to this theme because we often don’t see a trans perspective in conversations of family. In the transgender and q***r community, we have a sense of “found family” between us due to the hardships that we face. There is a culture of taking in those in need and accepting them as your family due to shared experiences. This is
why it is only natural for Ash to welcome Jeenu into their home because they most likely know what it is like to have a strained, or no, relationship with parental figures. They know what it is like to be called the wrong name or to not have the words to express themselves yet. This connection between them is as real a family as either has probably ever experienced, but they still are not recognized in the eyes of the heteronormative legal systems.

Q: Ash is a boxer, a role often associated with toughness. How does the play complicate that image and how do you balance Ash's strength and vulnerability?

A: Ash’s role as a boxer bleeds into how they act in everyday life. A lot of the scenes read like a boxing bout with words instead of fists. It is so interesting because you can always tell when the knockout is in these scenes because one person walks away metaphorically beaten. Every character in this play is defending themselves from all angles, so when there is a moment of vulnerability, it is either very dangerous or very intimate for the character. Ash knows that when they leave an opening, they get hit, so it is hard for them to not see that vulnerability as weakness. What ultimately brings this vulnerability out is their adopted son, Jeenu. This is because Jeenu and Ash understand each other’s experiences in a different way than either has felt before. Whether it be not having the words to express yourself, being an outsider in your own home, or being looked at as something you're not, these similarities make both of them feel seen, which is a vulnerable feeling.

Mobile Shakespeare Lab takes UB theatre beyond the stage

This fall, Shakespeare is leaving the stage at UB and heading into the community.

As part of a new pilot program, the Department of Theatre and Dance is launching its Mobile Shakespeare Lab and taking a reimagined production of “Macbeth” to venues throughout Buffalo.
Danielle Rosvally, assistant professor and creator of the project, hopes the initiative will make the department’s work more accessible and encourage new audiences to attend university productions.

“I would love for people in the community to be more curious about our productions and stages, as well as the work we do here at UB,” Rosvally says.

For its inaugural tour, the Mobile Shakespeare Lab will present a streamlined, remounted version of the department’s popular spring 2026 production of “Macbeth,” adapted specifically for touring.
The adaptation centers on three college students in the United States who are struggling with a world in which political discourse and legislative action have placed their identities, communities and safety in jeopardy. They turn to “Dungeons & Dragons” as an escape, using role-playing to process the world around them and imagine what a better one might look like. The three students take on the roles of the witches, guided by their Dungeon Master, Hecate.

The production will travel to three community partners during its pilot year: Irish Classical Theatre Company on Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m., the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library’s Central Library on Nov. 7 at 1 p.m., and Amherst High School for a closed performance. The community performances are general admission and no tickets are required.

Amanda Benzin is a somatically-conscious, rhythmically and passionately driven educator, Emmy-Award-winning performer, choreographer, scholar-artist, and administrator. She holds an MFA in Dance from CU Boulder with concentrations in performance, choreography, somatics, women and gender studies and pedagogy. She graduated summa cm laude from the University at Buffalo with a BFA in Dance and minor in Business Administration. Benzin was a member of the Chicago-based rhythm jazz dance company Jump Rhythm Jazz Project touring nationally and internationally and receiving an Emmy Award for her work in the multiple-Emmy-Award-winning documentary JRJP: Getting There. She has performed, worked, and studied with diverse artists, including Gesel Mason, Erika Randall, Rennie Harris, Nii Armah Sowah, Nada Diachenko, Erika Berland, Tim O’Donnell, Jonathon Scott, Teena Marie Custer, Ananya Chatterjea, Billy Siegenfeld, Jeannie Hill, Gus Giordano, Frank Hatchet, Roberto Villanueva, Brandon Ellis, Robert Reed, Bill T. Jones, Doug Varone, Denise Vail, In Young Sohn of Korea, and Eager Artists of South Africa, across numerous genres of dance.

Her teaching experience includes jazz, tap, modern, contemporary, hip hop, musical theatre, improvisation, choreography, and pedagogy to children and adults of all ages in many arenas across the country. Her research, musical theatre and dance choreography have recently been presented at Niagara University, Music is Art Festival, UB’s Zodiaque Dance Company, Colorado Mesa University, American College Dance Association, Alma College, DSA’s Conference at University of Malta, Hawaii International Conference on Arts and Humanities. Benzin previously served as Assistant Professor of Dance and Dance Program Coordinator at Colorado Mesa University. She is currently the Associate Director of The Baldy Center for Law and Social Policy at the University at Buffalo School of Law and Senior Lecturer in Dance at Niagara University.

Ephrat "Bounce" Asherie is a NYC-based choreographer, performer and b-girl. A Bessie Award winner for Innovative Achievement in Dance, Asherie creates work for the dynamic group of dancers in her company, Ephrat Asherie Dance (EAD). Dedicated to honoring the ethos of NYC’s underground club community, EAD explores the inherently complex and dynamic qualities of various Black and Latine vernacular forms, including breaking, hip hop, house, and waacking. Asherie’s singular way of creating “compact bursts of choreography with rapid-fire changes in rhythm and gestural articulation” (The New York Times) brings forth work that is aesthetically innovative, physically rigorous and unceasingly curious. Asherie has received numerous awards to support her work including Dance Magazine’s inaugural Harkness Promise Award, a Jerome Artist Fellowship and two fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts.

Asherie’s work has been presented on stages nationally and internationally with additional commissions from Vail Dance Festival, Fall for Dance, Works & Process at the Guggenheim, Kennedy Center Theater for Young Audiences, PHILADANCO!, Parsons Dance and Malpaso. Asherie is honored to have been mentored by Richard “Break Easy” Santiago and to have collaborated with Michelle Dorrance, Doug Elkins, Rennie Harris, Bill Irwin, Gus Solomons Jr. and Buddha Stretch, among others. Asherie earned her BA from Barnard College, Columbia University in Italian and her MFA from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee where she researched the vernacular jazz dance roots of street and club dance. She is a co-founding member of the all-female house dance collective, MAWU, and is forever grateful to NYC’s underground dance community for inspiring her to pursue a life as an artist.
