Make Music Day Celebrates Free Live Music on the Summer Solstice, June 21
Buffalo is part of Worldwide Celebration

Buffalo will be joining cities across the world in celebrating Make Music Day on June 21. The event, started as Fête de la Musique in France in 1982, encourages people to attend free live music events, and musicians of all skill levels to get out there and play.

Featured events include:
• The Colored Musicians Club, The Dale Toliver Jazz Quartet, and Vibrant Strings at Island Park from noon-5pm, presented by the Village of Williamsville, https://www.eventbrite.com/e/juneteenth-village-of-williamsville-tickets-1388248501639
• Tom Stahl at Flying Bison Brewing Co. from 4pm-7pm, presented by the Buffalo Music Coalition, https://www.facebook.com/events/9753172521418111
• Sousaphunk ft. Joe Roscetti Jr. from 5pm-8pm at Delaware Park, presented by Resurgence Brewing and Pints in the Park, https://www.facebook.com/events/1329839171424014
• Fête de la Musique at The Cave from 7pm-11pm with Maggie Roston Quintette, Adel Chouchani, Marc et Marcy, Cousins Trio, Marcus Lolo, 5 Birds on a Wire, Buffalo String Works, and Ralph Walstrom, presented by Alliance Française de Buffalo, https://www.facebook.com/alliancefrancaisedebuffalo

In addition to the above events, Porchfests will be occurring in both South Buffalo and Lewiston, providing even more free music that day.

“Make Music Day is a great chance to get out there and hear some of Buffalo’s best musicians,” said event co-organizer Tod Kniazuk, “but it’s also a time to grab your guitar, horn, harmonica, or whatever you play, go out on your porch or out to a park, and make some music of your own.”

Held on the summer solstice (the longest day of the year), the world's largest annual music event celebrates the inquisitive spirit and natural music maker in everyone, regardless of age or skill level. In 2024, Make Music Day included 5,304 free public concerts in the U.S., at over 1,500 locations. This year, 31 new communities join the party, reimagining their cities and towns as stages where every kind of musician — young and old, amateur and professional, of every musical persuasion — fills streets, parks, plazas, porches, rooftops, gardens, and other public spaces to celebrate, create, and share their music.

Make Music Buffalo

Music on June 21 can come from anyone, anywhere, and anything – even flowerpots! 💐⁣

Flowerpot Music, written by award-winning composer Elliot Cole and directed by percussionist Peter Ferry, is a composition for an unlikely but beautiful percussion instrument – the flowerpot! Bell-like tones are passed from performer to performer in improvised gestures called “blooms” that sweep through the group. The piece is written in simple prose, and can be performed by non-musicians and musicians alike.⁣

Cole and Ferry have created a special online version of the composition for Make Music Day 2020. Performances of Flowerpot Music by over two dozen groups from around the world will be live-streamed continuously for over 8 hours on June 21st.⁣

Several performance slots lead by Peter and Elliot are open to participants anywhere! Visit bit.ly/MMDFlowerpot to register! ⁣
