In creating Understory we wanted to bring together plant enthusiasts of all kinds, but we also wanted to gather together the community environmental organizations doing vitally important work across neighborhoods. Orgs such as the Newtown Creek Alliance, Gowanus Canal Conservancy and NYC H2O who have tools and resources for anyone to take direct action in their local landscape, via soil lead test kits, mapping, bioremediation planting, and more. We appreciated this critically important New York Times article about the Red Hook ball fields from this weekend.

Our Story

UNDERSTORY aims to gather a broad audience— with programming meant to engage and connect diverse sectors of the city: amateur and experienced plant enthusiasts, as well as anyone who is curious about our regional natural landscape.

Founder and Director Cerise Mayo has been focused on city-dweller’s relationship with their surroundings. “The goal of this event is to connect New Yorkers from amateur and experienced plant enthusiasts to artists and designers to families and local residents to writers and academics and for anyone who attends to leave with a broader understanding of the incredibly diverse opportunities to connect with the natural world in New York.”

UNDERSTORY will feature a marketplace, showcasing producers such as ceramicists, textile artists, basket weavers, woodworkers, a outdoor Soil + Compost section, and a Citizen Science Fair highlighting work and projects that engage New Yorkers with their urban environment.

A wide variety of hands-on workshops will be presented throughout both days of the event in multiple spaces, from floral design workshops to fermentation classes to art and science classes for kids of all ages. Outdoor workshops, and on and off-site tours round out the explorations into the natural environs.
