Roulette One of the most creative and prolific centers for experimental art in the United States since 1978. Founded in Tribeca, based in downtown Brooklyn.

Roulette began in 1978 as a spontaneous presentation of work by artists in a loft on West Broadway in Tribeca, and has since evolved into an internationally recognized experimental art center. Now based in Downtown Brooklyn, Roulette supports artists through presenting a substantial and diverse program of experimental music, dance and intermedia, commissioning new work, paying the artists professional fees, and finding artists an audience interested in learning about traditions and developments in these art forms.

Wednesday, 11.11! composer, saxophonist, and sound experimentalist Matana Roberts premieres “off the record…”, a solo, multimedia performance that acts as a celebratory, loving postscript to their acclaimed COIN COIN project (Constellation), which was conceived in connection to a Roulette Commission.

the performance will integrate tidbits from each of the records in the COIN COIN series as it moves between memory, imagination, and lived experience. part story, part call, the work follows association rather than chronology with language, gesture, silence, humor, and a chance shaping each telling.

here’s an excerpt from Roberts’ performance of “Trail of the Smiling Sphinx” from Coin Coin Chapter Four: Memphis, featuring Matt Lavelle on trumpets, Hannah Marie Marcus on violin, and Ryan Sawyer on percussion 🔥🎼📖🌬️.

together, the quartet explores the boundary between acoustic and electronic sound. through live amplification and processing, instrumental timbres are altered, twisted, and blended into vivid aural hallucinations, dissolving individual voices in a collective network of sound.

Melissa Almaguer Melissa Almaguer opens the night with a solo set of tap dance and percussion. expanding from tap dance into gongs, seed percussion, field recordings, resonant objects, and electronics, Almaguer builds evolving sonic environments where movement, texture, and rhythm become forms of storytelling through improvisation.
