The Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center is a state-of-the-art performing arts center that is the home for concerts, theatrical and dance performances, special events and SDSU’s School of Performing Arts. Four primary venues offer: The Oscar Theatre (proscenium theatre with 841 seats), Larson Memorial Concert Hall (acoustically adjustable hall with 1,000 seats), Fishback Studio Theatre (black box t

heatre with 180 seats) and Founders Recital Hall (225 seats, with a 52-rank pipe organ) with all technical support needed for outstanding performance and audience experiences. The naming of The Oscar recognizes the vision and exceptional, unwavering generosity of the Pat and Dale Larson Family and the Larson Foundation. The Oscar is a comprehensive facility providing spaces for both the instruction and performance in dance, music and theatre. Developed by Design Architect Malcom Holzman, and acoustically engineered by David Kahn, the center proves that what an individual hears and sees during performances do correlate and that great art is made in great settings. We would like to share that Jim Johnson will be inducted into the 2026 South Dakota Hall of Fame as one of ten amazing individuals.

"Dr. James L. Johnson, a theatre educator, spent 30 years at SDSU as Director of Theatre and Prairie Repertory Theatre, directing 105 plays and shaping over 13,000 students. He championed arts access in rural communities and was one of many instrumental figures in establishing the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center in Brookings. He retired in 2003 as SDSU Distinguished Professor Emeritus."
