NATIONAL DAY OF THE COWBOY ~ 2023
He’ll Always Be A Cowboy
Poem by Ken Howry
Painting is, The Last Of The Real Cowboys by Denny Karchner
He used to sit tall in the saddle
Now he just sits in the shade
And he stares off into the distance
Relivin’ the memories he made
I remember him tellin’ us stories
Of the horses, cattle, and men
That helped to forge a good cowboy
Now he can’t go back there again
We treasure the miles rode together
Though most of the time he can't speak
But I'll hand 'im some horsehair or leather
He nods then his eyes start to leak
The tracks are now slowly fadin’
The trails, they just don’t look the same
His ol' body has sure 'nuff betrayed ‘im
He gets lost somewhere in his brain
But at times he still catches glimpses
Of the way that it used to be
When he rode the bad buckin’ horses
Or tied a wild cow to a tree
Though his face remains so stoic
His expression it may never change
But look deep in his soul’s windows
You’ll find him out ridin’ the range
Yes Sir, he always will be a cowboy
No matter what this life holds
‘cause his saddle still sits there beside him
And he never did sell out his soul…

Matthew 16: 24-27 (KJV)
24Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 25For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. 26For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? 27For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
