In this immersive short film, freediver Rose explores various jungle caves and sinkholes (cenotes), in Mexico’s Yucatán.
Mental focus and breathing techniques allow free divers to swim to extraordinary depths without equipment. Where many people experience anxiety, claustrophobia and fear, Rose finds calmness, silence and otherworldly beauty.

“Sometimes I feel like there is magma thudding through my veins, burning at 10,000 degrees, my heart ready to explode. So I recruited a friend and went to Guatemala to talk to the volcanoes about the situation; I figured they'd have some insight. We ran from one to the next, climbing as close as we could to their raging mouths, examining old wounds, swimming in calderas, feeling them quiver beneath our feet.
We swung on vines through the cloud forests, studied the flowers that bloom from the fertile ash, drank the coffee that's been seeded into their lush sides, slept to the glow of nature's lava lamp. Fell in love with the brilliant culture, the vivacious locals, the delicious and ubiquitous street food. And ran and ran, seeking the wisdom of the land.
Earth To Ashes: 125 miles, 7 volcanoes, & 27,000 feet of elevation. Put on a headset, and I'll show you what we found.”

“Earth To Ashes: Running the Ring of Fire through Guatemala” is a short film created by with support from our first-ever VR Adventure Filmmakers Grant, a collaboration with and with support from Daydream.

Yawarani is a film created in collaboration with the indigenous community in Yawarani to preserve their sacred culture and the wisdom of their elders.
The community in Yawarani have set out to immortalize their culture in film and virtual reality to create documentaries to educate their youth, as well as broadcast their beautiful, sustainable lifestyle to the outside world.
Throughout the creation of this piece, we hosted workshops in Yawarani to teach indigenous creators all stages of the VR and film production process, including the screenwriting, camera operation, scene design, post production and editing. The end result is a virtual reality film made by indigenous creators to preserve and share their culture.”

See the Amazon through the eyes of the indigenous community in Yawarani. Freedive the Yucatán’s cenotes. Run up Guatemala's active volcanoes. Skate the Rockies’ high alpine ice. Experience paragliding as Gus, the flying pug.

For our first-ever VR Adventure Filmmakers grant, we collaborated with Outside TV and with support from Daydream to award five filmmakers with the funding, training, gear and mentorship to turn their adventure dreams into virtual reality. Our grantees— Cedar Wright, Laura Kottlowski, , Alisa May Geiser, John Mans —learned how to tell immersive stories from the ground-up, then took those skills into the field to each create an original, experimental film. Under the close guidance of YouTube experts and experienced VR filmmakers – Abbey Smith, Pete Takeda, Jeffrey Rueppel, Jim Aikman, Graham Zimmerman – they pushed into the possibilities of this emerging medium to produce a collection of groundbreaking films. We’re proud to share them with you. Click here to immerse yourself in their adventures. http://bit.ly/VRAFF2019
