Antes Mu**to Cine is a film collective based in Buenos Aires, committed to producing documentary and experimental cinema. Their collaboration began during a protest at a public university, where they captured images and sounds that confronted and explored their surrounding reality. Since that moment, they have aimed to cultivate a practice that connects past and future experiences, striving to reclaim the absurd and everyday beauty often lost amidst chaos. They seek to create vibrant films, whether crafted in private or on the streets, that emerge from spontaneous insights and embrace playful experimentation. Believing that filmmaking is inherently linked to its production process, they view friendship and comradery as key elements of their creative endeavors.

Program:
The International by Tatiana Mazú (2015, 13’)
Can a Mountain Recall by Delfina Carlota Vazquez (2021, 20’)
Strata by Julián Galay (2020, 11’)
Fire in the Sea by Sebastián Zanzottera (2022, 15’)
First Image of Mars by Manuel Embalse (2023, 19’)

Mimesis Without Organs presents:

The Phoenix of Gaza XR: Gaza in the Sky
Palestine, State of, United States | 2024

The Right to Look Up

How does it feel to be afraid to look up when blue skies drop strange objects with terrifying sounds?
What supplication can be answered looking down when hope above is stolen by the abyss on the ground?

Remember the sun and the olive tree, for in your heart, a sprouting olive does not require the sentence of a two-thousand-pound bomb
Imagine GAZA before, during, and after Occupation
Our skies were supposed to be peaceful
and we were meant to offer them to everyone
Look up for those afraid to LOOK UP!

The Phoenix of Gaza XR team, in collaboration with the Department of Media Studies, the Center for Documentary and Ethnographic Media, the Immersive Media Lab, and the Center for Media, and Religion and Culture invites you to a unique immersive experience at Fiske Planetarium.

RSVP is required.

Filmmaker Johan Grimonprez joined us and shared some of his recent work, followed by a candid conversation about his cinematic practice. Curated by Mimesis programmer Jean-Jacques Martinod, this event challenged and mutated the boundaries and discourse surrounding the contemporary landscape of documentary media.

Recently invited to be the Guest of Honor for this year’s IDFA, Grimonprez is well known for his steadfast vision which critically challenges the ways history itself is recorded and fabulated. His 1997 film Dial H-I-S-T-O-R-Y, which examined the role of mediated public perception surrounding airplane hijacking, ominously forecasting 9/11, was selected by The Guardian in From Warhol to Steve McQueen as one of the 30 works to tell the history of video art. His most recent film Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat, regarding the potentials of decolonization and global self-determination, told through a parallel history of jazz, premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival where it received the Special Jury Award for Cinematic Innovation.

It’s exciting to witness and recognize when threads align. These days…when visions of future congeal in pedagogy, action, communal recognition, coven, love & praxis, it’s lovely to gesture it somehow.

With this in mind, we were excited to this year inaugurate our collaboration with Cool Boulder in recognizing works that explore and innovate the languages and forms we explore in tackling the existential threats that fall upon our living worlds in our time.
