Can part of America’s story be told through music?
In 1958, Ritchie Valens (Ricardo Valenzuela) turned La Bamba into a rock & roll hit in Spanish. Then came Santana, José Feliciano, Julio Iglesias, Menudo, Selena, Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin, and, after the rise of the internet and streaming, Shakira, Daddy Yankee, Karol G, Rosalía, Bad Bunny and many others. For decades, Latino artists were described as “crossing over” into the American mainstream.
But what happens when Latino culture is no longer crossing over when it is helping define America itself? That evolution in music mirrors the larger story told in Live from America: How Latino TV Conquered the United States.
