Boston Next Step is a community organization for survivors of the Boston Marathon attack, along w/ their first responders, family, friends and supporters. BostonNextStep.com is the Unofficial Official Survivors Website. It’s an “open source forum,” which was started by survivors, for survivors. What does this mean for survivors? It means YOU own it, YOU create the content, and YOU post whatever yo

u want. Why do you want to participate in this website? For starters, many of us have photos, articles, videos, foundations, fundraisers, books, etc. to share and promote (beyond just Facebook). At some point, some of us may be job hunting, or trying to sell something. Some may just need to vent and blow off steam. We want to provide one place for all of us to do all of that. This website will be inclusive, not exclusive, so none will ever feel left out. http://bostonnextstep.com/

I was nominated, by my MEEI doctor,
for the Oticon "Focus on People" Awards.
They chose me as 1 of only 3 Finalists.
The rest is up to YOUR VOTES...
WINNER GETS FREE HEARING AIDS!
(These cost me $3-$5,000 every 5 yrs.)

The Oticon Focus on People Awards recognizes outstanding people with hearing loss who are helping to show that hearing loss does not limit a person’s ability to make a positive difference in their families, communities or the world.

The Massachusetts Resiliency Center sent out the following information: "Tips for Survivors of the Boston Marathon Bombing".
(NOTE: Thanks to Melida Arredondo for sharing!)

Coping with July 4th Triggers:

It is important to know that as a survivor of a traumatic event like the Marathon Bombings, there may be images, smells and sounds that can 'trigger' memories and feelings of the event. Even just anticipating experiencing something like the July 4th festivities, hearing the sound of fireworks and smelling the burnt fireworks, might create distressing reactions that are as strong as they were at the time of the bombings.*

In addition, post trial memories and experiences may also be fresh on one's mind. Fear, frustration and anger, as examples, are not unusual responses when you are reminded of your losses-physical, emotional and spiritual.

*Smells tend to be some of our strongest memories and they last the longest.

How to Cope:

First, understand that you may have some strong distressing reactions even many months later especially when trigger events occurBe patient and kind with yourself; accept that this is part of the recovery process and will take time; rebuilding occurs on many levelsTry coping skills like arranging to be with supportive family and friends; engage in stress management like deep, slow breathing; gentle stretching and giving yourself positive messages to help stay calm. Support and self-calming techniques can help you emerge stronger than before and perhaps participate in events you once enjoyed.

If you or someone you know is struggling after a disaster or traumatic event, you are not alone. Call 1-800-985-5990 or text 'TalkWithUs' to 66746 to get free help and support by trained crisis counselors. TTY for Deaf/Hearing Impaired: 1-800-846-8517
Spanish-speakers: Text "Hablanos" to 66746
The Disaster Distress Helpline is available 24/7/365.

Fireworks are a Fourth of July tradition. But for some people with PTSD, they are no fun at all.

I'm putting this out to our community - our daughter has been doing retail and then retail and temp work and has decided that it's time to settle down and get a full time job with benefits. She is almost 28 and has been a pull myself up by the boot straps kind of gal putting herself through to earn her bachelor's degree which she completed last year. She is connecting with the Resiliency Center but I also thought I'd put it out to the Universe here for leads for admin assistant work and/or development work. She is delightful, tenacious, has a great work ethic and is using Indeed and recruiters but as we all know, sometimes it really helps to have that inside track. Thank you all so much!

After experiencing trauma, it is so important to take time for self care to heal and take the next steps forward. Dr. Ryan Means of Elevate Health Cambridge who attended One Boston Day invited survivors and their families to have a free treatment with him and to learn more about the benefits of chiropractic care in helping the mind/body to heal. We were also blessed to experience the deeply healing touch of Jeffrey Spratt of Spratt Muscular Therapies on One Boston Day. He offers a wide range of modalities that can easily fit into anyone's budget or schedule. Visit the Resources page on Boston Next Step for other resources that are available to help you take excellent care of yourself mind, body and Spirit. http://bostonnextstep.com/resources/ Please join the dialogue and let us know your recommendations for healing and self care.
