THE PARISH OF OUR LADY OF CZESTOCHOWA IN BOSTON CELEBRATED DOŻYNKI: A TIMELESS CELEBRATION OF FAITH, HARVEST, AND COMMUNITY ACROSS GENERATIONS.
The event, now in its 25th year, was recently recognized and presented an official Massachusetts State Senate Citation.
The Polish Harvest Festival, known as Dożynki, is an annual celebration of profound importance, today as it was many centuries ago. This festival, marking the successful completion of the harvest season, is the largest agricultural holiday in Poland, with roots stretching back to pre-Christian times. For the Polish community worldwide, it is far more than just an event; it is a vital expression of gratitude, a heartfelt acknowledgment of the farmer's hard work throughout the year, and a powerful reaffirmation of community and cultural identity.
Dożynki celebrates the end of the harvest, embodying a spirit of thanksgiving for the year's bounty. Historically, since the feudal systems of the Middle Ages, the observance involved three essential rituals: the ceremonial cutting of the last crops, the creation of an elaborate harvest wreath from grain, and a procession with the wreath to the manor house or cottage, culminating in a grand feast of traditional food, music, and dance.
Today, Dożynki beautifully blends these ancient agricultural traditions with Christian faith. Modern celebrations, which can be secular or religious, always involve giving thanks for the crops, often directed to God and the Mother of The Son - Jesus. The creation of the ornate grain and floral wreath—a central symbol representing the harvest's culmination—is then presented to the community or church, a gesture that symbolizes shared prosperity and God's blessings. The celebration is brought to life with colorful folk costumes, lively music, energetic folk dances, and traditional Polish cuisine like pierogi and kielbasa. (Nothing better: classic pierogi ruskie {Potato & Cheese} or my favorite - Meat {Mięsem} for kielbasa the choices are endless, so we'll keep it simple: {fresh or smoked}, the later being my preference)
The Polish community gets involved in Dożynki through every stage, from preparing the traditional foods and crafting the beautiful wreaths to participating in the thanksgiving services and the joyful feasting and folk performances. This communal effort fosters a strong sense of unity, making the event a vibrant display of Polish culture, heritage, and hospitality.
The importance of Dożynki is especially pronounced for the diaspora community—those people who have spread or been dispersed from their homeland. For them, celebrating the harvest festival, whether in Poland or abroad, is a crucial way of keeping traditions alive and reinforcing a connection to their Polish roots.
The Parish of Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish in Boston and the Polish Harvest Festival- Bostonl have been inspiring torchbearers of this tradition, hosting its Annual Polish Harvest Festival (Dożynki) for 25 consecutive years. We are incredibly grateful of OLC-Boston, not just for this event but for everything it consistently does for the Polish community as a whole.
