Murat Recevik: …in between color and form…
I first wrote about Murat Recevik for ArtProvincetown in 2021, after he and his talented artist wife, Elspeth Slayter, invited me to their lovely Provincetown home for tea and homemade Turkish cookies. During my recent stay in town, I happened to run into them again and we had a chance to catch up and talk about both of their upcoming shows.
Murat’s new exhibition, …in between color and form…, opens September 11 at Tillie’s. The new collection explores the relationship between color, form and physical space, drawing inspiration from early 20th-century avant-garde movements, particularly Suprematism and Russian Constructivism.
Murat is interested in how color can actually change our perception of space. Cooler, lighter colors create a greater sense of distance and openness, while warmer, darker colors seem to pull the space together. By placing non-objective forms in unexpected relationships, he experiments with where color ends, form begins and the boundaries between the two start to disappear.
It’s an interesting evolution for an artist who has always explored form in unexpected ways. When I visited Murat in 2021, we talked about everything from his oil paintings to his Calder-like sculptures made from discarded objects. He told me then that by giving broken and forgotten objects new life, he hoped to show that “our past is never dead.”
Five years later, Murat is still challenging the way we look at objects and the spaces around them, this time through color, geometry and abstraction. I’m looking forward to seeing this newest body of work in person. We’re also overdue for another cookie meet up.
