We're excited to showcase the work of notable, local artist Karen La Beau this June at the Uneeda Biscuit Artist Lofts - but who is Karen?
Karen La Beau, raised in New Orleans as part of a family deeply rooted in the city’s culture and traditions, moved to Shreveport, LA twenty years ago. She is Visual Artist, Curator, and Cultural Advocate whose work centers around storytelling, heritage, music, and community connection. With more than 17 years as a professional artist, she has dedicated her career not only to creating art, but also to supporting the growth of emerging and established artists throughout the region.
Her evolving body of work, Karen La Beau: My Life on Canvas, reflects personal experiences, cultural preservation, and the emotional rhythm of everyday life. Through vibrant imagery and layered narratives, Karen’s work explores identity, Black culture, memory, resilience, and the traditions that shape communities across generations. She views her art as part of her legacy and strives to create meaningful visual experiences that deeply connect with collectors and audiences alike.
Her contributions to the arts community have earned her multiple honors, including the GUTS Award for Artist Community Contribution, the Cultural Bearer Award in New Orleans, the Artist Fellowship Award from the Shreveport Regional Arts Council, and recognition as one of the top four visual artists in Northwest Louisiana by 318 Forum. In 2018, she received an Artistic Merit Award at the Red River Revel and has twice created the official poster artwork for the Highland Jazz & Blues Festival!
Beyond the canvas, Karen continues to advocate for creative visibility, cultural dialogue, and artistic empowerment through exhibitions, mentorship, community programming, and collaborative arts initiatives throughout the Shreveport-Bossier region.
Come and see her work on display this June 7th at "Canvas & Cadence - Honoring Black Music" from 2 PM - 5 PM! Only at Uneeda Biscuit Artist Lofts!
