Although hard to believe in the early 80’s visitors flocked to enjoy Bolingbrook for the chance to be entertained and shop at Old Chicago, Americas first indoor amusement park opened June 26, 1985. An article from the January 15, 1981 edition of the Bolingbrook Beacon Newspaper
underscored the need for such an event. Statistics shared by acting Village Administrator Barb Ketterman, quantified a ho
using surge which added 8,000 residents between the years of 1980 and 1981. A special census commissioned by the Village in 1982 estimated the population at 38,278. This figure was stacked on top of a 50% residency increase between the Spring of 1979 and 1980. Today, Bolingbrook’s population totals more than 76,000 residents. What most interested Village Officials was the unprecedent diversity the numbers obscured. Even though it was not mentioned in the article, the uptick in residency was a ripple effect from exposure to Old Chicago. Leadership also understood that the resident influx was not a fluke, but a factual trend forecasted to continue through the following five years. In response, a citizen-led commission was empowered with the responsibility of planning an annual event designed to engage residents of every age, race, cultural and religious background. Nearly four decades and numerous incarnations later Bolingbrook’s Village Picnic has grown into a family favorite staple. In years past, it has extended numerous opportunities to engage with wide ranging faith serving denominations as well as a host of local clubs, groups and non-profit organizations. Summarily, the Village Picnic is a place where Bolingbrook residents can meet and/or reconnect with neighbors in a comfortable, fun, family friendly atmosphere. Set to return again this year, Joe Gross, Civic and Cultural Affairs Commission Chairman along with his trusty crew have set the stage for what he believes will be the most well-attended Picnic in its 37-year history. In its present incarnation you can look forward to enjoying an event the symbolizes our community’s unique sense of solidarity as we celebrate the return to a new normal. All activities, held on Village Hall grounds, continue to be designed to promote Bolingbrook’s civic and cultural environment in additional to fostering an awareness and appreciation for local life. Depending on State of Illinois rules and regulations, the Village of Bolingbrook will attempt to bring back all family fav’s from the past which might or may NOT include:
FREE Hot Dogs & Hot Dog Eating Contest, Art in the Park, Raffle, Fishing Derby, Egg Toss Contest, Petting Zoo, Scavenger Hunt, and Senior Cooling Tent. Please note there are NO pets allowed with the exception of service animals.
