Lake A Thon

Lake A Thon A day in the year where we choose to be epic.

09/07/2024

Every year, for the past 16 years, our community has gathered for the Lake-a-Thon. It is a tradition that continues to amaze and inspire. This year was no exception.

From young children to seasoned athletes, everyone came together to support the Peggy O'Leary Seigler Scholarship, each other and the unofficial punctuation on summer. The camaraderie was evident as participants cheered each other on, offered words of encouragement, and helped those in need.

A particular highlight was the bravery of our swimmers, who faced their fears and conquered the deep end of the lake. Their determination and resilience were truly inspiring. The water was cool and the wind was much, making it even more of a challenge to those who fought off panic to prove they can do hard things. You are amazing.

We were also thrilled to see families competing together, including grandmothers, daughters, and grandchildren. New girlfriends and boyfriends are tested, not just with meeting the family, peesha, that is the easy part, but meeting the community and competing in an event, well see the previous statement of being able to do hard things.

The sense of unity and shared accomplishment was inspiriting. We had newbies and oldies, which made finding a replacement for Carol Marcus’ crown very difficult. But seriously, come on, really, who can replace Carol? We had about 63 brave souls to compete, but about equally as many supporting. So Fantastic.

We raised just shy of 2,000 dollars for the scholarship, which is just plain amazing. Zack and Caroline came in neck and neck for first place with literally less than a second difference between them.

I mean, if you look at the top 10,

Zack

Caroline

Mat

Allison,

Scuba Mark,

Milo

Red,

Mitch,

Beth and

Mattias

there is less than 10 mins between them all. And then there is Jake, who made his own race and came in first with running around the whole lake, skipping the swim and boating legs. And Jessica, who could not face the walking part, so swam from her house on the bowling alley to Jodie and Kevin’s to boat back.

This is the point of the thank you that we like to thank the volunteers and call them out by name, but that is getting harder and harder to do every year because there are so very many people involved. Jodie tasked me with writing the note, but….

How do you property thank all the volunteers and participants?

Well you don’t.

If you try to, you will fail miserably and leave someone out. I spent all this week trying to make sure that all those that were part of the heavy lifting were called out. I have leveraged AI, my neighborhood, past stories and still, I am not proud of the list I have created. I know we have forgotten so many. However I am proud of the way we have found in this community to make a difference.

Larry and Kat and Rob moved to the lake to enjoy the tranquil beauty of our world. A secret spot that is like no other. However, they have found that once a year, the entire neighborhood cascades onto their dock for a quick change or access to their boats. They have leaned in and that is wonderful. Thank you Kat and Rob for the balloons, the gatorade and the processing of sweaty shoes and clothes! Thank you Larry for the hand holding and cheerleading.

Doug showed up to his old dock to support Larry because it is a big responsibility.

Nancy, Pete, Kim, Mark lend their support every year. Always.

Doris shows up on her porch to ring bells, hoot and holler, and sometimes on her birthday!

Guy took the mantle of designing the shirts and they were excellent.

Liz hosted the art table which created such treasures

Kim captured the event, once again, with lovely photos that tell a story of passion, excitement and camaraderie.

Cathi timed folks that wanted to know their times, while watching her granddaughter cheer for daddy.

Brad solved the coffee/hot chocolate issue by making a Dunkin’ Run.

Kevin got the bagels to us safely

Susan for helping pick the poem

Carol and Tina, because, well just because.

Joanne, though not onsite this year, cheered from her window and pumped us up the weeks and days before the race.

Those that came to their first race

Those that have competed every year

Those that spot every year

Judy and Blake always taking on the role of sweeper and supporter

Jen’s texts asking when the race started and did she need to bring a bathing suit? And George bringing his beard.

Jeana, Brianna and Emiliano who drag my friends and our boats back to my dock

All those who shared their watercraft, Abby I am looking at you.

The Lake-a-Thon is more than just a race; it's a celebration of community, courage, and camaraderie. Felix mentioned when asked what was the best thing, he said there were two things, jumping in the cool water after the run AND doing it, he was proud of himself for finishing. Anderson Kirby, one of our littles was also asked about the race, what he thought, how he felt, and at 5 years old, he called out that he was proud of himself.

Yeah buddy, we are proud of you guys too. These kids these days. A good reason to have hope.

Thank you so much. Jodie and I are excited to see what next year's event will bring!

With love and gratitude,

Winnie and Jodie

Enough by
Andru Defeye

You are enough

Divinity flows in your fingertips
with light so radiant
every beat of your heart
a victory march
made of whole universes
stitched by the hands of creation
with flawless design
a prophecy You fulfill perfectly with every breath

You

The sun wouldn’t shine the same without it
Creation is only waiting for You
to smile back at it

Do you see it yet?

You are enough
For the birds to sing about
For the seeds to sprout about
For the stars to shoot about

Do you see it yet?

Gardens in your speech
Fields of wildflowers in your prayers
Lighthouses in your eyes
No one else can see it for you

You have always been enough
You will always be enough

Your simple act of being is enough

Do you see it yet?

And just like that, it is the end of August and we are enjoying the cooler evenings and big blue skies.

It has been a summer.

We have had Pancakes for breakfast and ice cream for dinner.
There have been Progressive evenings;
Happy Hours;
Jazzy weekends;
Birthday celebrations for someone none of us knew
Girls nights; family reunions, visitors, (so many visitors), and we continue and plan for Holiday markets, more visitors and cold weather events.

Truly there is a little something for everyone here.

AND this weekend, it is finally time for the Lake a Thon

Whether you are competitive or complacent.
Whether you are active or actively avoiding activities.
Whether your body screams to engage or screams when engaging.
Whether you are quietly confident or exuberantly demure.

There is a place for you at the Lake A Thon, much like summer on the lake.
Here are the rules:

Be kind.

That's it.

The Lake A Thon starts at the Clubhouse with a gathering around 10 am Monday Sept 2, Labor Day. At 1030 the race starts. We walk/run to the Olin’s place on South Road. There will be signs, but it is just past Sisco Place, just past Brad and Lori’s house and before Felix’s place. Don’t worry, if you follow the crowd, the signs, or Matt Moran you will find the right dock.

Swim to Jodie and Kevin’s. And this may be the tricky part, you must have thought through the race before you get to this point. First, you need to be wearing your bathing suit. This is a family event. Kat will be grabbing your shoes and carting them back to the club, so you are ok there. Thank you Kat. But you will also need to think about whether or not you want to be part of a relay, use a float, who is spotting you and exactly where you left your boat. These are important things to have in place before you leave the clubhouse.

Swim to Jodie and Kevin’s, hopefully, where you left your boat earlier that morning or late the night before. Nancy and her team will help you find it assuming you remembered to leave it. If not you will need to hitch a ride. Not something I recommend you do in the middle of the race. But not a problem if you were able to plan ahead. But you do you boo.

Third leg is the paddle part. No motors please. Head back to the clubhouse to cheers and celebrations of you! Have a bagel, some cream cheese, a cup of coffee and realize that you have been epic this morning.

(Also, consider what you will be dealing with if you provide coffee to the littlest of the competitors. You will be taking them home and be sure that a jacked up 3 year old is exactly what you want to manage for the rest of the day. You must take them home at the end of the race.)

Or you can cheer all of this from your dock or door or deck or the beach or the porch. It is up to you. We love our volunteers, our participants and our spectators.

We are still taking applications for Carol Marcus’ Crown of Last Person In.

I know this is a long email and thank you for getting to the bottom, we will be thrilled to see you on Monday. We have been waiting for so long!

This is it, the last day to order, don't miss your chance to support those that race, those that are fighting and those that are learning. (Maybe that was a little dramatic)

Every year I find this note harder and harder to write. Not because I don’t have the words, I have all of them, but I just don’t know what order to put them in. My brain gets scrambled by all of the amazing stories, great tales of bravery and patience and moments of inconspicuous kindness.
Dianne has asked me for a run down, but I find that really hard to do in a way that wouldn’t require chapters.
A few impressions are here to remind me of just how special a community this is and I will try to share, in the briefest of format:
We had the largest turn out ever (we think) with 100 racers (participants) and somewhere around 45 spotters.
We had a delay in the start due to thunder, which we waited out, and after 15 mins past the last clap, we started the race. Ironically it was only about 3 mins late.
We had at least one grandmother, daughter and grandchildren compete.
There was a father and son finish in the top 10 (one of them being in a relay)
One brother traveled down from Boston to race his brother..... literally came to the lake for the morning and then headed back in the afternoon and yes, I do know who beat whom, but that is their story to tell.
We raised over $1,500 for the Peggy O'Leary Seigler Scholarship at FIU
We had EVERY age group represented. We had participants from the 5 and under crowd all the way up to the much over 5 crowd.
We had an especially gutsy group this year with non-confident swimmers braving the deep end of the lake. Seriously lionhearted swimmers who prepared for the event and while dedicated athletes, find swimming to be both frightening and challenging.
We worked as a team to quickly help one swimmer who lost her breath to the coolness of the water after the heat of the run. We also worked as a team to get chairs to the waterside, table out and then away, cars emptied, and empty boats carted back home. The way that everyone just does and there isn't a need to ask for help is really very lovely. If I started to call out anyone, I am not sure that I would be able to do it in anything without chapters and I am really working hard on keeping this brief...yeah, I hear you rolling your eyes.
The delightful mermaid raft that was given several years ago as a prize has once again found a home with a youngster who competed fully, including the swimming leg, and this time, no life vest needed. The weird thing is the mermaid has transformed into a unicorn! We live in a magical place for sure!
We had more than one person step in with their volunteer hat ready to go! Someone brought a blueberry something, someone manned the swag table and Joanne is training others in the act of getting folks signed in and out.
Cathi’s son asked to be timed, and since I don’t know what that means, I asked her and as teachers do when another teacher asks for help, she stepped in and had it pulled together, organized and captured before we reached the first turn in the road.
We had an amazing day of warm weather and cool waters. It was absolutely perfect, which got in the way of more than one nap. It is hard to give up a perfect day on the water no matter how hard the siren call is to the napping house.
There was a rumor that the time of the race was moved to 11am…or there was someone being super clever trying to get a half hour head start ...
Speaking of louder, thank you to the soundtrack and photos shared back! My race was enhanced by Chariots of Fire, and it makes me giggle even today.
This story ends with a simple call to action Labor Day is September 2, 2024. Mark it on your calendar, invite some friends, plan to be amazing. Details to follow but meet at the clubhouse at 10am for a start time at 10:30, unless there is lightning. If there is lightning, we wait. Sept 2, plan to turn it up to 11!
Thank you for sharing your epic!

IN PRAISE OF CRAZINESS, OF A CERTAIN KIND
by Mary Oliver

On cold evenings
my grandmother,
with ownership of half her mind-
the other half having flown back to Bohemia-

spread newspapers over the porch floor
so, she said, the garden ants could crawl beneath,
as under a blanket, and keep warm,
and what shall I wish for, for myself,
but, being so struck by the lightning of years,
to be like her with what is left, that loving.
