Happy National Trails Day 🥾

The new Byron Herbert Reece Trail opens today! This new trail is designed to better fit the intent of designated Wilderness and to be more resilient and sustainable over time.

What does this mean for you?

The new trail is narrow and designed to feel natural and less developed, providing hikers with a more traditional backcountry experience.

The new trail is a little longer, making an in and out hike to the summit of Blood Mountain 5.1 miles.

The new trail will intersect the A.T. farther uphill toward the summit, no longer aligning with the Freeman Trail at Flatrock Gap.

Stay tuned for future posts on why and how this trail was built and check out our website for a detailed map.

🌱Growing More Than a Garden 🌱

A self-sustainable garden is about more than growing food, it’s about cultivating independence, stewardship, and a connection to the land.

This season, we encourage families to dig in the dirt, grow something edible, and experience the satisfaction that comes from harvesting your own food. You may even find, like Byron Herbert Reece, that the quiet moments spent in the garden inspire creativity, reflection, and dreams of your own.

What are you growing in your garden this year? Share your photos below!

We loved seeing over 30 adventurous kids enjoying the outdoors, learning about fishing, and making memories together by the creek. Events like these remind us how important it is to connect the next generation with nature.

The Rog wants to send very special THANK YOU to all of the organizations, volunteers, and friends who helped make this event possible. Your support, time, and dedication help get kids outside and exploring!

Hidden among the greens and wild beauty of the mountains, Wormwood is quietly growing here at Reece Farm. 🌿

Known for its soft silver foliage and rich herbal history, Wormwood has been used for generations in traditional gardens for everything from natural pest control to medicinal and herbal practices. Its strong herbal scent and unique appearance make it one of the most interesting plants in the garden.

This hardy plant thrives in the Appalachian landscape and adds beautiful texture to any herb or cottage garden. Whether you love gardening, herbal traditions, or simply learning about mountain plants, Wormwood is definitely one to notice.
