Concordia in Birmingham, Al

Concordia in Birmingham, Al Organized in 1886, rebuilt in 1950s -70s, still dancing!! They contributed to the economic development of the city and cultural diversity of the community.

"Concordia" stands for community and joining hands in friendship and assistance, as seen on the club symbol, which was later adorned with the iconic image of Vulcan, the symbol of Birmingham, AL. The original purpose of the Concordia Society was to cultivate sociability, enjoyment, singing, and native customs of the members, most of whom were German descendants. Of course, where there's singing, t

here's dancing: local bands were invited to play for dances at the club. At the time of industrial boom in Birmingham, Concordia's members built their careers in banking, real estate, brewery, bakery, and other business ventures. Nowadays, the Concordia Society membership is not limited to German ancestry, but rather focused on promoting comradery and appreciation of art in the multicultural local community. The Concordia members and guests gather at the club on weekends to enjoy socializing, dancing, and celebrating important personal events. Dance classes are often offered during a week, or before the dance. The first 100 years of the Concordia's existence were thoroughly researched and then documented in the unique book "A history of the Concordia Beneficial Society 1886-1986" published in 2005. Marjorie Dixon Baggett was credited with conceiving the idea and gathering the materials, Kay Stapleton King did the research and writing, while Frank C. King took the responsibility for photography, compilation, and editing.

Guess who did something good this weekend? Our volunteers!!! Boak started early: on Friday morning he came by the club and cut the grass! Then Jeff Whitcomb, Jeff Beard, Jim Sims, Ken Lorek and Jerry Donahue took care of cleaning the parking lot, trimming the bushes and the lawn, and putting the dance signs up. Many thanks to our wonderful volunteers!!!
